2x1 GB + 2x2 GB on Asus P5E3 Premium Mobo

Hi,

I am considering moving from Windows XP 32bit to Windows 7 64bit later this year or beginning of the next. I am currently running an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 and 2GB of ram (TWIN3X2048-1333C9) at 9-9-9-24 on an Asus P5E3 Premium WiFi Mobo. Once I upgrade to Win7 64bit I would want to increase my RAM up to at least 4GB . Knowing that my motherboard can support transfer rates up to 1600, I am wondering whether:

a) I would be better off installing a new 4GB matched pair(TW3X4G1600C9DHX) running at 1600 and chucking the old pair

b) or else keep using the current modules and adding a new 4GB matched pair running at 1333 (TW3X4G1333C9) ending up with 6GB of RAM but with an odd setup of 2 pairs of the same memory with different sizes - 2x2GB and 1x2GB.

What do you reckon I should do? Thanks a lot

PS. I will use my PC primarily for gaming.

First with an Intel chipset you cannot run the memory faster than the CPU FSB, so the fastest memory you can run in that system would be DDR1333 unless you over clock the CPU.

And if you try to Mix the sets more than likely you would need to lower the memory frequency to DDR1066 with more than one set installed.

I would suggest just replacing what you have now with one 4-GIg Set for best performance.

NP Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Actually I do have some more questions;): Occasionally I do overclock the E8400 up to a max of 4.00ghz.

1)At these speeds would the 1333 ram be a bottleneck to the performance?

2) The shop next to my house only has the following 4Gb kit: TW3X4G1333C9DHX. I tried looking for reviews on this module to no avail. Can you tell me whether these can be OCed to 1600 in case I'm willing to OC my CPU to 4Ghz. If yes, what settings would you recommend?

3) Also, at the stock CPU FSB of 1333, would 1600 RAM be detrimental to the overall performance or they would simply run at 1333 like any 1333 RAM would without causing any problems?

Thanks a lot in advance

I would agree with Wired if you want to over clock then you may want to run faster memory, and no you don't have to as you can run the memory slower than the CPU FSB you just cannot run the memory faster then the CPU FSB
