Meloncoly
Although I have applied for an RMA, and properly tested that it is indeed my video card by process of elimination, I was wondering if the buzzing is safe. I don't want the power supply to fail on me, since I just bought my system. Should I refrain from using the computer, or would it be safe? The fan seems to be running fine, and the whining noise is a electrical noise rather than a mechanical noise. Sounds like noise you would hear when there's cellphone interference with speakers (which I unplugged both from the computer and power source). It's making the nose as I type this message. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks. Edit: I have tried the fix on the forum sticky but to no avail.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 14, 2009 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 14, 2009 Is the video card is causing the PSU to buzz? The buzzing is likely a capacitor that is vibrating due to an out of sync power signal. This would not indicate any danger of operating the system or that any of the components would be prone to failure. Other than the annoyance of the sound there is nothing to worry about. The buzz usually comes from the PSU the video card or the motherboard, and in some cases I have seen video cards cause certain PSUs to buzz. If at any time it looks like the buzzing is caused by the PSU and the noise is loud enough to be bothersome, then we can try replacing the unit for you. To have the PSU replaced you can use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.”
Meloncoly
I have swapped the video card to a Radeon X850 and Geforce 7900GS, and the buzzing noise is still apparent. I know it's not a video card issue. My motherboard has no fans, only a fanless heatsink. I have checked my fans in the case as well by unplugging every one but the heatsink fans, and the buzzing noise is still there. I have also checked the heatsink fans, and they are not making the sound. It's more of a electrical noise if anything, but it doesn't sound like a broken fan bearing or fans hitting anything. The only thing I can suspect is the power supply itself. I also have my power connected to a APC Back-UPS RS 900 so the power is conditioned, yet it still has the sound, so I can't blame the power coming in to the power supply either. I have signed up for an RMA already before I posted, but I wanted to ask a question. I will be going back home soon, and it's within a hour drive from the shipping center located in Fremont, California and I was wondering if I could just drive there and drop it off and acquire another power supply instead. It would be faster than shipping it. It would be in two weeks from now, so would the RMA expire then or can I extend it or cancel it and reapply later? Thanks RAM GUY
Wired
The RMA #s last for well over a month I believe. Call tomorrow and talk with Customer Service. They'll be able to tell you if / how you can swap it out in person.
Meloncoly
Thanks for the information Wired. I was going to call today but I had class till 7PM so I didn't make it. I have free time tomorrow so I will definitely ring Corsair up. I've had experiences where I had to get my package postmarked within a week of getting the RMA number so I was just wondering how Corsair's policy was.
