nspande
Hi all, I just recently built myself a new system, and decided to go in for the Dominator PC2-8500 C5 RAM. I built the system (specs in profile) and everything seemed fine. I then turned on EPP support in the BIOS on my mobo, and suddenly I started seeing errors in somewhat random apps, but mostly Seti@Home. Sometimes, but not always, these would bluescreen Vista. I quickly figured out that turning off EPP support, thereby dropping speed down to 800MHz, resolved the problem. In order to make sure the RAM wasn't overheating, I bought an Airflow unit. No go. 1066 gives errors all over the place, 800 perfectly fine. Now I know that the processor is pretty recent, so I made sure I had current BIOS. Same thing with three BIOS revisions - 1.40 (shipped), 1.50, and 1.60 (current). This thing is rock solid at 800, but I paid extra so I could go to 1066. Any ideas? I really am not needing to overclock the system, although I may once I have more time, but I'm thinking that since the board and the memory support 1066, this shouldn't be a problem. Thanks, Nathan
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 13, 2009 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 13, 2009 Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS and then load setup defaults and set the memory Voltage to 2.1 Volts and set the tested settings of your specific modules and test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org to be sure one is not failing. If you get errors we will be happy to replace them but if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would suggest testing them in another system to be sure. nspande
Well, I spent some more time on this today, and I think I've narrowed it down a bit. I did testing with each stick individually, and both ran perfectly at 1066 on their own. Memtest+ gave no errors at all for either stick on its own. Am I right to think that perhaps this indicates that there is an issue with the dual channels, perhaps overloading the memory controller? I've tried to find out what I might be able to do to resolve this, as the board, the processor and the RAM all claim to be capable of 1066, but I'm a bit at a loss. I've tried slowly bumping up the CPU-NB VDD voltage, but it hasn't made any difference. Anybody out there have other ideas? Thanks, Nathan
nspande
Turns out, I'm an idiot. I had the DIMMs in slots 1 and 2, rather than 1 and 3, so they were both trying to do 1066 on a single channel. I got them on separate channels and all was well.
