Help needed selecting RAM - 3GB or 6GB on GA-EX58-UD5/X58

Recommended Posts

I am moving from 4GB RAM on a P965 chipset/GA-965P-DQ6 motherboard to an X58 chipset/GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard with an Intel Core i7 extreme on a 32bit Win XP OS.

The 2 or 4 GB choice on the 965P-DQ6 was easy but I am not certain if I should go with 3GB or 6GB on the X58 knowing that I cannot take advantage of more than ~3.5 to 4 GB with the 32bit OS (64bit is not an option until my employer upgrades some database and VPN software).

If I want to favor performance over price and hope to move to Win 7 64bit should I go with 3GB or 6GB? I will run XMP or configure manually to XMP profile but will not over clock otherwise.

- If 3GB, I was considering TR3X3G1600C8D or TR3X3G1866C9DF

- If 6GB, I was considering TR3X6G1600C8D or TR3X6G1866C9DF

Help picking out memory for best performance would be appreciated and I do not mind loosing the ~2 GB if this is even an issue.

Thank you…

If you are a gamer and you want this rig to do VERY well after you go to a 64bit OS, then go with 6GB. The memory speed is up to you. If you want good OCing potential, go with the 1600s. If you want great OCing potential, then go with 1866.

But, 3 x 1GB is VERY fast too so no big loss there.

Another factor, what video card or cards will you use and are you a gamer?
