Asus RMA Board Booting Problem

Been awhile since I been here, hopefully Derek is still around :p:. Anyway, Asus mucked up with a BIOS released that screwed up my board, and many others, so I had to RMA it. Got a new board, Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus, and this one has problems too. No matter what I do the PC will not boot with RAM in either Slot 3 or 4. I am able to run RAM in Slots 1 and 2 with no problems but as soon as I put RAM in the 3rd or 4th slots all I get is a nice black screen. I have the 2x2GB C4DHX and C5DHX and tested with both of them. They both past Memtest without any errors. I would really hate to have to talk to Asus "tech" support again for 30min before they finally realize I need yet another RMA. I'm hoping someone here will have an idea.

How many sticks are you working with? You are not trying to run the same overclock on this board that you had with the other board?

Set to defaults and the memory to 800Mhz with 5-5-5-15 2T if you have 2 X 2GB. If you are populating with four modules, then drop to 667Mhz.

Test your modules singly and in dual channel mode.

Download Memtest86+ V2.11 from--->

Download CPU-z from
.

Insert a single stick of your prior memory in the first slot (closest to the CPU). Restart. Enter your BIOS.

Set to these values:

AI Tuning = Manual
Nvidia GPU Ex = Disabled
LinkBoost = Disabled

Extreme Tweaker Screen

FSB & Memory Config
FSB - Memory Clock Mode = Unlinked
FSB (QDR), MHz = 266 (1066)
MEM (DDR), MHz = 400 (800)

CPU Configuration
CPU Multi = Auto
CPU Internal Thermal Control = Enabled
Limit CPUID MaxVal = Disabled
Enhanced C1 (C1E) = Disabled
Execute Disable Bit = Enabled
Virtualization Technology = Enabled
Enhance Intel Speedstep Tech = Disabled

Chipset

Memory Timing Setting
tCL = 5
tRCD = 5
tRP = 5
tRAS = 15
Command Per Clock = 2 clocks

Advanced Memory Settings

tRRD = Auto
tRC = Auto
tWR = Auto
tWTR = Auto
tREF = Auto
tRD = Auto
tRFC = 60
Async Latency = Auto

Voltages
Vcore  = Auto
Vdimm (DRAM Voltage)  = 1.9v
1.2v HT = 1.2v
NB Vcore = 1.30v
SB Vcore = Autov
CPU VTT = Auto

Shut the system down. Boot to the Memtest CD and allow for two full passes. Shut the system down, remove the stick from slot 1 and insert it in slot 3 and retest with Memtest. Shut the system down. Remove the first stick and insert the second stick in slot 1. If both sticks test stable, shut the system down and insert the second stick of DRAM in Slot 3. Restart the system and boot to the Memtest CD. Allow for two full passes. Shut the system down, remove the memory and insert it into slot 2 and slot 4 and retest.

When assured of stable DRAM, then enter Windows and Run CPU-z and post screenshots of CPU-z's CPU, Memory and SPD tabs.

Results?

I have already tested the RAM. As I said in my first post, the motherboard will not POST with any RAM in either the third or fourth slots. I am only using one set and that is the 2x2GB C4. I only mentioned the C5 as I had used it for testing. I have tested with both BIOS defaults and my OC, both work fine until I move the RAM to the third or fourth slots. My RAM runs at 4-4-4-12 2T @ 2.1v. CPU is OC'ed to 3.0GHz with a 1334FSB and 9x multi and RAM is set to run at 800MHz. VDimm is 2.1v like it should be and Vcore is 1.35v.

RMA of mainboard. You can not run in Dual Channel Mode if the third and fourth slots are hooped.

I sent an email to Asus yesterday requesting an XRMA and specifically stated I will not pay anything so we will see what happens. If they refuse its most likely the last thing I will by from them. Its a shame their customer service isn't like Corsairs.

Yeah I've almost gotten that number memorized I've called them so many times. I was trying to avoid it as I didn't feel like yelling lol. I did receive a reply and was told "I have set up a case# for you as a 3rd level tech representative will be calling you within 24 hours from today to set up an RMA and discuss what can be done to get this RMA done ASAP. Thank you ". I think I got my point across, just waiting for the tech guy to call. Thanks for the number.

NP and please let us know how you make out. And don't forget to get the persons name you speak to it may be important.

They didn't call, wasn't really expecting them to, so I called them today and spoke with one of their third level techs, whatever that means :sigh!:, Eric S.

He sent me the RMA information along with a prepaid FedEx label so I will be sending the board directly to him. They might not have my board in stock anymore, which I hope they don't :laughing:, so I would be getting the P5N-T Deluxe instead. Still an Nvidia chipset unfortunately, but at least its something slightly better. Will post another update once the board gets to him and he calls me.

Finally got a hold of Eric. He tested my board and everything was as I said. He's not working today so hopefully tomorrow or early next week they will ship me a new board. I should be receiving the P5N-T Deluxe as the replacement so am looking forward to it. :biggrin:

Finally got my new board today. Booted it up and everything seems fine, but haven't done any stress testing yet. I just set my old OC settings that I had and it booted fine. Am looking at getting a new case and PSU, but thats going to have to wait and so will a new OC. I've got enough SATA cables, SLI bridges, and the other stuff that comes with motherboards for at least six PC's lol.
