CharlieHustle
Back in January, I purchased a new system (in dropdown). When trying to turn it on, i get a flash of power while pushing the power button, but it never powers up. 1 out of 100 times it will actually POST, but then it will turn itself off a few seconds later. When it does POST, it only shows up as 1066. After RMA'ing the mobo, cpu, and psu, it is still doing the same thing. I have taken everything out of case and tested just mobo and cpu with no RAM and it starts up and stays on until I turn it off. I have tried each stick in each slot and it does the flash thing every time and never comes on except once every blue moon. Any ideas?
DerekT
Have you upgraded to the latest BIOS that allows for the XMP setting? If so, set to XMP. Back in January, I purchased a new i7 920, EVGA X58 sli mobo and EVGA 280 gpu, and Corsair TR3x6G1600C9 to go along with it. When trying to turn it on, i get a flash of power while pushing the power button, but it never powers up. 1 out of 100 times it will actually POST, but then it will turn itself off a few seconds later. CharlieHustle
Well I got the update from mobo website like you said. After 200 or so tries to get it to power up it finally came on, acting fast I got the flash done. After shutting down to power back up and load defaults in BIOS as instructed, the power would never come back on and still hasn't. Once again, I can take RAM out, and it powers up fine, plug ram back in and nothing.............each of the 3 sticks and nothing. I am very suprised it stayed on long enough to finish the flash, and I suppose I got lucky it didnt power off during. Now what besides calling everyone to get my money back? Over 2 months of dealing with this is too much.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 25, 2009 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 25, 2009 Have you cleared the BIOS after your flash? Clear it with the jumper and also remove the battery for about 15 minutes and give it another try.
CharlieHustle
Yes Yes Yes!!! Thank you both for the responses! Of course a few minutes after I got done typing my last reply, I turned power back on to check it one last time and it fired right up! Now I know where to come next time I have issues. Its hilarious that the techs at EVGA didnt even recommend this, they had no clue of what to do. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

It's actually very easy to skip a small yet very important step when troubleshooting on a test bench. It's even easier to miss it when doing it online. Glad to see you got it going! CharlieHustle
Well this time I have been hesitant to reply. It still wont start up for me unless i leave it without power for about an hour. Then I set it to xmp, hit save and exit. When it restarts, it doesn't power up. If i dont mess with it, i can get to windows and I have started installing my drivers, but when i restart like it askes, it doesn't power back up just like before. I am at a loss for words. Edit: I guess I should say I have only been able to get it to power up at all with only 1 stick in. Almost does with 2, but never does with all 3 sticks in. GeekSquad suggests RMA for the ram??? This sucks!
Yellowbeard
I have seen quite a few cases like this here, at the EVGA forums, and elsewhere. There are 3 primary causes of the behavior you are seeing and in no particular order: 1. Bad or incompatible PSU causing a "cold boot" issue. 2. 1 or more bad memory slots on the MOBO. 3. 1 or more bad memory modules. Can you test the memory modules in another system? It does not have to be an X58 board. You should be able to validate them and run Memtest in any working DDR3 MOBO. Based on what you have posted, it seems like the PSU or the MOBO is more likely but we'll replace the memory if needed.
CharlieHustle
Ok. I am now on the pc that I have been describing. After setting Bios to XMP profile, and leaving it at Autodetect for mem settings, I got it to come on. I have 2 sticks in and they are showing as 1600 during boot, so I think everything is ok. I have restarted a few times and no problems yet, but I am scared to turn power off. I still need to finish the closing the case and need to install last stick of ram. To specmike, I have already RMA'ed the psu, mobo, and cpu, so I personally dont think its one of those. I guess I can try memtest on here now.?. CharlieHustle
Since the last post, I turned off the computer to install the last stick and plug some fans in, and it still hasn't came back on. I can take ram out and it fires up first try, so i dont think its a compatability problem with the psu. RMA is being set up shortly.
DerekT
If the same issue repeats, you will have to RMA the board. Be sure to ALWAYS document the serial numbers of the RMA'd product. I have seen cases where the same board is mistakenly sent back. Have you set the parts on a bench? Removed it from the case? Use a jumper to the Power_SW on the motherboard header to start the system up. You may well have a case wiring issue. CharlieHustle
Yes, after RMA of board, I tried on bench with only mobo, cpu, and psu. Powers up fine. Insert any of the 3 sticks while on bench, no power up except that 1000th try with only 1 stick in. I have canceled everything out except the ram. Its the only thing that powerfailure is tied to. Out of 4 major parts, ram is only thing not RMA'ed yet. The 2 minute window I had each time it powered up in beginning is gone now that I updated BIOS to get that xmp setting you mentioned. That is how I got Vista installed finally. Restart works now from when I had to restart due to Windows updates and drivers and such, but once I power off, its almost impossible to get it back up. Anytime I exit out of BIOS, power fails. Hard to think all 3 sticks are bad, but I have tried everything else. Have been told RAM doesnt use same section(lack of better word) on each startup. Maybe not whole sticks are bad just certain section might be, thats why i get power up at different times. Who knows...
DerekT
I wonder if you did not get the same board back. Flashes of power will not be memory. At any rate, you can RMA the memory and see if this fixes the issue. I doubt it however. Yes, after RMA of board, I tried on bench with only mobo, cpu, and psu. Powers up fine. CharlieHustle
Well as of this morning, it came on with 1 stick in on first try, got to BIOS, hit exit and save, went to windows. I turned power off and tried again 5 min later and nothing. It almost always works when I wait overnight before trying it again, but after that its a guessing game. Doesn't make sense at all. On describing the power flash, I say flash because when I push the power button, everything gets power for that split second I have the button pushed in, then nothing. When tested on bench, everything powered up first try without RAM in, but I tried each stick and nothing. Can you explain that? I did the black dot test on each piece I sent back, so I am pretty sure I didnt get the same parts back each time. But as it stands right now, I am thinking I am gonna send the RAM back, then try the mobo again. I am calling EVGA now to get that started on their end. Guess I should go ahead and start one here also...
DerekT
This is called the cold boot error. Often it is a power supply issue. http://www.google.ca/search?pz=1&ned=ca&hl=en&q=X58+cold+boot+error&btnmeta%3Dsearch%3Dsearch=Search+the+Web Well as of this morning, it came on with 1 stick in on first try, got to BIOS, hit exit and save, went to windows. Yellowbeard
. To specmike, I have already RMA'ed the psu, mobo, and cpu, so I personally dont think its one of those. I guess I can try memtest on here now.?. It's not a matter of a defective MOBO or PSU. The cold boot issue is a compatibility issue relating to how the PSU starts up and how the MOBO BIOS senses it.
