DDR2 800 CL5 vs CL4 for Gaming !

quality

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i have 2 x 2gb xms2 CL5 5-5-5-18 & while most people say when it comes to gaming CL4 makes no difference over CL5 i found to be not true in my case because while playing gta iv with CL5 memory i noticed the game sometimes will slow render iamges & my pc takes long time to boot so i tried everything but wasn't successful at fixing the issue until i changed the ram timing to 4-5-4-15 & then the game will no longer do slow rendering & my pc is somehwat faster. so my question is if i get rid of CL5 ram & buy the corsair CL4 will game run better ? also why do most people say the performance of CL4 ram over CL5 ram in gaming is hardly noticeable & is not worth the upgrade ???

Typically other factors influence game play quality more than memory latency. These include and in no specific order:

GPU

CPU

Memory amount

If you do a memory upgrade, you will see the most improvement when this is done along with a faster CPU or OCing your existing CPU.

i think i will just increase the memory amount from 4gb to 8gb s i already have q6600 @ 3.5 & hd 4870 . thanks for the advice ramguy.

Before you do that try 2 things.

1. Take a look at your games or applications you are running using Process Explorer, Google it. Look at your overall and game/app specific memory usage

2. Read AN804: http://www.corsairmemory.com/appnotes/default.aspx

Of course we'd love to sell you more memory but, going from 4GB to 8GB may make little or no difference if you are not going above about 3.3GB of overall memory usage.

thanks for the good advice ram guy. :):

i use everest to monitor everything inc my memory usage & it did show that i have gone just above 3.5GB while playing gta iv so i i do need to add more ram & for future proof too.

Ah, very cool. I have not had a chance to test GTA 4 yet. Does Everest show how much the game itself is using? Process Explorer will.

no everest doesn't show but before i start playing gta iv the mem usage is usually around or less than 1.5gb & after 50 min of playing it goes up to 3.5 -3.6gb & everest logging shows the longer i play the game the more memory it uses so i think gta iv still has memory leak issue,i already have latest patch applied.

btw i'm using vista 64bit. (memory hungry OS).

ps: gta iv has forced thousands of people like myself to upgrade to quad core, latest graphic cards or crossfire, sli (psu upgrade) & increase the mem in their pc's.it shows great & must have games like gta iv are great news for hardware makers too.

i have a question please guys :

can i run the following memory as ddr2 800 : 400mhz @ timing 4-4-4-12 ??

TWIN2X4096-8500C5 - 8GB (4x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2, PC2-8500 (1066), 240Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15, EPP

i want to overclock my q6600 to 3.6 & have the above mentioned memory running at ddr2 800 speed with CL4 timings . 400mhz x 9 = 3.6mhz

You are welcome to try it and I would increase the NB/MCH/SPP Voltage to +.2 Volts and then test the system with http://www.memtest.org to make sure it is stable, but most of that will depend on the MB and CPU you have.

i have just ordered the 4x2gb ddr2 1066mhz memory sticks & hopefully with some voltage adjustment i will be able to run them @ 4-4-4-12 ddr2 800.thanks for the advice RG. ;)
