saru763
Hi, I have an HP Pavilion a850y with 1GB (2x512) currently. I'm thinking about getting another 1GB (2x512), CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory, VS1GBKIT400. My motherboard is the OEM Asus PTGD1-LA. My computer is not listed in the Memory Configurator. Is it possible to check if that specific RAM will be compatible on my machine before I buy it? Also, I've read that I cannot change the RAM voltage in my BIOS. So I think it's at 2.5volts. Does that mean I'm limited to 2.5volts or lower? I'm assuming 2.6v and higher will not work on my machine at all. Oh, and I'm a total noob at buying/understanding RAM. So I don't know what "timings" and all that are. Thanks for your help! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 25, 2009 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 25, 2009 If you want to up grade I would suggest replacing what you have now with one set of VS2GBKit400C3 for best performance.
DerekT
They should work just fine. VS is the way to go, but sometimes motherboards have issues with a four DRAM slot population. You are indeed limited to 2.5v JEDEC DRAM on that machine. You may do better to purchase 2 X 1024 and remove the 2 X 512 as a four slot population can be problematic. That being said, the 4 X 512 should be fine. The reason I advise the 2 X 1024 is because the memory is very cheap and 2 X 1024 is faster than 4 X 512 due to the lowered bandwidth of a four slot population. You will find that 4 X 512 will drop from 400Mhz to 333Mhz to deal with the four slot population and that 2 X 1024 will run with 400Mhz. Hi, I have an HP Pavilion a850y with 1GB (2x512) currently. saru763
Cool, thanks a lot guys! I went ahead and bought the 2 x 1gb pack, VS2GBKIT400C3. My mobo likes it so far, no errors or problems when installing and using. I have another question though. I went ahead and tried to use my new RAM with the old, using up all 4 ram slots. Derek said that my ram might drop in speed. My BIOS doesn't really say anything when I start it up (Yeah it sucks.) Is there a program that I could run that will test those speeds for me? (And what data should I be paying attention to?) Trying to decide if it's beneficial to have my older ram still installed or not.

saru763
Oh, I guess I should have mentioned that in CPU-Z, my "memory" tab is all greyed out (due to a sucky OEM mobo.) DerekT
You have dropped your memory to single channel mode. I would just run with the Corsair memory and dual channel mode.
