Problem running at 1066 with ASUS P5Q Deluxe & TWIN2X2048-8500C5DF

Hi there-

I've had a tough time trying to get my system running with the higher memory speed. If I run things with all settings at "Auto" or even an overclocked CPU (with memory speed at 800,) I never get any errors.

I have a set of 2GB memory sticks that I tried with my motherboard with settings I found in this forum but got errors (from memtest) when trying to get them to work. I tried a single stick in each memory slot of the motherboard and found that only one of the slots gave no errors when running at 1066. This happened for both of the memory sticks, so I figured the memory was ok, and sent back the motherboard.

Now I've received my "repaired" motherboard back. Using both memory sticks still doesn't work. And now just trying one stick in the "good" slot gets errors in memtest as well. :-(

Since this memory is on the QVL for this motherboard, I didn't think I would have so many problems. I'd also like to eventually get 2 more sticks for a total of 8GB running on the system.

Is there some combination of settings that I should be using to get this up and running before I open a serious gash in my head from banging it against my desk?

Thanks :-)

Hi-

I'm just a single person, not a shop, so I don't have another motherboard to test with.

I sent back this board to ASUS because of the initial failings of memory not working via an RMA. They returned the original motherboard saying it had been repaired/fixed. The tests above are the first tests I've been doing since I got my motherboard back.

Of course I don't know exactly what they did at ASUS (for all I know they could have just reboxed my broken motherboard and sent it back to me.) But taking them at their word, I assume they did some testing (at least I hope they did) before sending it back to me.

Which is why I'm in this forum hoping to get a little extra help to get this thing to work. Originally, I tested the board with a different set of memory sticks, and they got similar problems. Thus I went out and got these ones because they are on the qualified vendor list. So allegedly, these are certified to "work" :-)

But if these setting that I am using are the correct settings, I assume I have to send the motherboard back again. If I do so, are there any recommendations you can give me so that whatever I get back from them actually works?

Thanks again for your help

If your above issues were on my workbench, I would document the serial of the motherboard, contact ASUS again for RMA and request a different board, not a "repaired" board.

You do NOT want to go through this again, nor should you have to go through this again. Failing that choice, you can also just accept 800Mhz as the speed and work on that level but lower the latency to get a faster performance.

ie 6400 @ 4-4-4-10 2T with 2.1v is very close in performance to 1066 @ 5-5-5-15 2T with 2.1v.

Thanks for the advice. Talked to ASUS and they said they'd replace the board this time. We'll see what happens. I'll post an update here when hopefully I receive a new board and all the other suggestions work after I install it ;-)

  • 2 weeks later...

Got my replacement motherboard, which doesn't appear to be brand new, but at least is a different one.

Tried running with the same settings above using both sticks of memory at 1066, but got errors.

Tried one stick of memory in each slot and it worked fine.

Tried the other stick, and it got errors.

Tried my other brand (OCZ) of memory with two sticks and it worked fine (with 2 different sets of 2 sticks.) Tried all four and got errors (a future issue ;-) )

Anyway, it appears that one of my sticks of Corsair memory is bad, so I guess I'll try to sort through the RMA process to get a replacement.

I'll post the "good news" results (hopefully) when I get the replacement.
