TWIN2X2048-8500C5D won't POST at 1066

I'm running the latest BIOS on my ASUS P5E-VM DO motherboard and it auto-detects my 4GBs of RAM as DDR-800, so I decided to manually configure the RAM. When I set it to 5-5-5-15 2T at 1066 and 2.1V, the system refuses to POST. When I back it down to 1000, with the same settings, it POSTs without issue. I've left all other RAM-related settings at 'Auto', as I'm not sure what the specific values should be. Is there something I'm missing here?

 

I know this specific memory is supported in my motherboard, but from all the information I've read I'm not 100% clear if it is supported when configured in all four banks.

 

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There is a lmitation of the On Motherboard (Intel) memory controller and a population of all four banks at the full speed of a two bank run. This limitation is across the board with both Nvidia and Intel chipset based boards, DDR, DDR2 and DDR3.

 

Keep in mind that often issues arise in the longer term. The issues seldom damage the DRAM. They damage the on motherboard memory controller which has a harder time keeping up with the demands of a four DRAM slot population being run as fast as a two DRAM slot population. Those who want to be secure in their system either purchase a single kit of the DRAM capacity that the four singles have or they move to a higher bandwidth DRAM and drop the bandwidth. I also advise it as I have personally seen the issues that can and often do arise with a four DRAM slot population running at the full speed of a single kit speed.

 

I personally advise for a two stick solution as it is far gentler to the motherboard memory controller.

 

At any rate, I can help you with the settings that should work if you wish. And if you decide to overclock your CPU <--> MCH <--> DRAM in order to recoup some if not all of your bandwidth, I can help you with that as well.

DerekT; I did read the article you referenced, as it's been referenced frequently and has a wealth of good info. I guess I was hoping that since Corsair and Asus both stated that this RAM was supported for this motherboard that I was just missing a setting or two. I guess the long and short of it is that it is supported, but not in all configurations.

 

I think switching to two DIMMS is out for now, and I probably won't go into overclocking until I bump up the cooling more. However, it seems to run fine at 1000 MHz, and there's a noticeable performance boost, so I'm inclined to leave it there. I would be very interested to know your recommended settings, though. Sounds like at the least, I may need to bump the other voltages up a little as RAM Guy indicated.

You need to raise the North Bridge Voltage +.2v. Also, you need to set the DRAM voltage to 2.1v, but I would assume that you have already done this.

Great. Now you need to test for system stability.

Download Memtest86+ V2.01 from--->

and extract the ISO image. Burn the ISO image to an CD-ROM disk. Run Memtest for two full passes. When assured of stable DRAM, then enter Windows and Run CPU-z and post screenshots of CPU-z's CPU, Memory and SPD tabs.

Well, unfortunately, I'm so far unable to get a reading on the current NorthBridge voltage so I don't know what to increase it to.

 

I've tried the Asus PC Probe II, HWMonitor, PC Wizard 2008, and Everest. Everest actually shows the SouthBridge voltage, but nowhere in any of these utilities do I find the NorthBridge/GMCH/NBV reading. I checked the BIOS, as well and it is not reported there. The BIOS setting is on 'Auto' so I can't tell from that, either

 

Any suggestions on a different utility or another trick to find the current NB voltage?
