Help!?! TWIN3X2048-1333C9HDX + GA-EP45T-DS3R = BSOD...

Hi everyone,

 

Almost a month ago I purchased a TWIN3X2048-1333C9DHX kit for an ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe motherboard along with a Q6600 and they worked well together.

 

I've been trying to build a Hacintosh (run Mac OS X) system (but I had a separate disk for Vista Business 64bit) and ran into driver incompatibilities so I returned the ASUS board last week and replaced it with the GigaByte GA-EP45T-DS3R motherboard because it's more compatible with Mac OS X.

 

After swapping motherboards, I booted into Vista and spent a couple hours getting it happy with the MB and then started playing COD5 WaW beta. After playing for an hour or so it blue screened. Being tired, I shut off the machine and went to bed.

 

The next day I went to use the computer and I had a really hard time getting it to boot. I was able to finally boot by clearing the CMOS on the system but it work start up into Vista and either boot half way or get into Vista then die with a BSOD. At this point I thought that the motherboard was bad so back to Fry's I went and swapped it for a new one. I plugged all the stuff back in, and still had the same issues with stability.

 

That sent me googling... and I found this board. Based on some of the threads I read I tried many things but the first thing that yielded stability was to run with only one of the RAM chips. At this point, I discovered that one of the chips could run just fine and the other one seems to be causing the crashes.

 

To make sure that things were stable I blew away my vista install (It was acting up but I assumed that was because of all of the crashes from earlier) and installed XP pro 64 bit. (I have an MSDN sub so I can load any OS I need). Everything worked perfectly as long as I only used one of the two chips.

 

I then did some more digging and found this thread:

In this thread "RAM GUY" suggests that the person having the problem do this:

 

Yes but with 4 modules DDR1066 would be suggested and I would set the memory Voltage to 1.8 Volts and set the NB Voltage to +.2 Volts as well.

 

I did that and installed the other chip and things are still working fine. My problem is that I think that I'm running under the specified speed because one of the chips can't handle the 1333 Mhz.

 

At some point I'd like to OC this box but if I can't even run at 1333Mhz I don't see how I'd get very far.

 

Is there anything else I should try before RMA's these chips?

 

Does Corsair have an advanced replacement so that I won't have to be without RAM for a week when I do the exchange?

 

Sorry for the long winded question, I just wanted to make sure that you understood how I got to this point.

First thing with the CPU you have listed the memory speed would be limited to DSDDR1066 unless you over clock the CPU and you should set the tested settings and test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org, but remember with this chipset the memory frequency cannot be more than the CPU FSB.

 

Thanks RAM GUY for responding. So are you saying that I shouldn't use more than a 4:1 multiplier with these chips and that if I jack the FSB up to 333 Mhz (that will run the CPU at 3Ghz) that the RAM should work properly?

 

Going from 266 to 1333 Mhz is a 5:1 multiplier and worked properly with the ASUS motherboard and with one of the time two RAM chips so this seems weird.

 

3.0G at 333Mhz FSB is pretty much as fast as I'd like to OC so I'll give that I try tonight if you think that it will work. Running at idle my cpu is running at 29 degrees C (Zalman CPU coolers are good!) so I'm not worried about burning it up.

So going in and changing the multiplier from "Auto" to 4:1 shouldn't have actually been a change at all.

 

The only other thing I changed were the voltages for the RAM and NB. The RAM says (on the heatsink) that it should run at 1.5V and I'm already at 1.8V, how much higher can you run it before you risk damaging it?

I got memtest running and I got memory errors after less than 2 hours. I've attached a screenshot.
