bve32k
Hello, I currently just built a new computer yesterday. And now that it is all together bios shows that there is 4 gig of ram, but when I go into Windows it only shows 3 gig. Any reason? Thanks! Bbrash
If what you wrote for your OS, Win Xp 32, is correct you can only support like 3.2 gig if you're using service pack 2.

I am currently using SP3. Does it make a difference?
Bbrash
I hope the RAM guy doesn't get mad or I'm not wrong... 3.2 gig are actual physical. An individual program on a 32 bit processor can use up to 2 gigs. The extra memory doesn't disappear though, but it's not as efficiently used as it would be under a 64 bit OS. Just found this that might be of interest to you if you don't feel like upgrading. Link
OldGeezer
Only way it will make a difference is if you switch to XP64 or Vista64. 4 gigs is the limit for all 32 bit systems. You need to include your video board memory and any motherboard memory in the 4 gig limit too. 3.2 gig of available memory is about par.

Last time I installed Win XP Pro x64 on my computer I could not install Firefox and a lot of my other software that I use. Is this a issue now with installing these kinds of software? Your question can not be answered because there are still softwares that will not work under a 64 bit Interface or a Winxp 64 bit Interface. Firefox is fine now but you would have to install and test to see if all your software works. I just tossed away and upgraded all the software that doesn't work in a 64bit interface and run a WinXP virtual machine if I have any need for software that does not run in a 64 bit interface. I just installed XP Pro x64 and found out that iTunes won't work with it. Just to get iTunes to work correctly I had to find the 64 bit version of iTunes and extract the msi's out of it and edit the msi's to allow them to install in Win XP x64. I also have a Netgear storage unit with 3/4 of a gig in it and it will not work with x64. I think I am switching back. Not work my time to play around with it. It can be problematic with older hardware. I understand your frustration. Still, you are better off with WinXP32 and 3+GB of RAM than 2GB. :)
