PSU Fan Speed

Restring

Recommended Posts

I have a TX650W PSU. The PSU fan runs so slowly that the case exhaust fan pulls air BACKWARDS through the PSU. I have an Ultra case with an OEM 120MM intake fan @ the front blowing air across the HHDs, a left side case vent to let intake air blow across the GPU, a snorkel (tube?) that allows the CPU fan to draw air from outside the case, and an aftermarket high output 120MM exhaust fan @ the rear of the case.

Using a fan control to slow down the case exhaust fan is out of the question. How can I SPEED UP the PSU fan? I'm seriously considering bypassing the PSU fan speed control and wiring it directly to an external fan controller. Voiding the Corsair warranty doesn't bother me. I just want the PSU fan to run faster.

Unfortunately there is no way to control the fan speed without voiding the warranty. By default the fan will only spin up when there is enough loading on the PSU to warrant it. Keep in mind that the PSU fan is meant to cool the PSU, and not the rest of the system. The fan spins slowly to reduce noise and only speeds up when necessary.

I never suggested the PSU fan was to be used for cooling my system. The present case fans are doing an excellent job. So much so that the exhaust fan is drawing HEAT out of the PSU, against the flow of the slow PSU fan. I can place my hand underneath the PSU and feel the heat generated by it, and can also feel air being drawn into the outside (exhaust) grille of the PSU.

What I was looking for is a wire or wires to cut and/or jumper so the PSU fan runs wide open. I can then calculate the proper size resistor to put in the (+) line to slow the fan down to a tolerable noise level. To make it short and sweet, how do I bypass the PSU fan speed control? If you don't know just tell me. It will take me all of 5 minutes to open up the unit, cut the fan wires and connect them to a power source. Like I said, I don't care about the warranty.

Thanks, either way..................

Unfortunately I could not tell you exactly how to do it, I have never tried it myself. I would imagine that it would probably be easier to replace the existing fan with one that will allow you to adjust the RPM.
