Recurring RAM failure (3+ years)

For the love of everything holy, can someone help me with this problem? I'm determined for this to be the last time my RAM dies!

 

1. Every 6-10 months that I've had this system (a few months after the X2 went live), my RAM has failed -- that is, the system crashes, memtest86 (yes, the newest edition) gives me millions of errors, etc.

 

2. In the 5 or so times that this has happened, I have tried to following steps:

a. send in the RAM for replacements (each time -- so this will be about the 5th pair I'm sending in)

b. sent in my mobo for replacement (the last time)

c. made sure all dust and whatnot was out of the physical system

d. made sure to virus/spyware/malware/etc check with all latest definitions (in safe mode and normal)

e. tried EVERY RAM setting available in BIOS -- standard, spd, auto, manual at recommended specs, turned on and off AINOS which is an automatic overclocking solution, etc

f. though the RAM should be in the blue sockets, I've also tried them in the black sockets, to no avail

 

3. Because of these steps, I'm out of troubleshooting options:

a. The RAM could be faulty... but 5 NEW pairs?! I think not.

b. My mobo could be accidently under/over volting... For BOTH the original, AND the replacement? I think not.

c. The psu could be faulty... but in that case, why are all my other components chugging along as if new? No problems with gpu, proc, hard drive... nada

d. I do keep my comp on and running for SETI@Home, but I try to shut down and give it a rest every 3-4 weeks.

 

I'm going to end up paying for these RAM sticks all over again through shipping fees, and I lose a month or so due to Corsair's RMA policy and the fact that this is DDR1 memory...

 

Anyone have any ideas?

 

 

 

EDIT: I just went through TechSupport Express, too. I assume I can get an RMA number through that route.

I would suggest that you load setup defaults in the BIOS, and then set the memory voltage to 2.75 volts. Test each module one at a time in the slot closest to the CPU with http://www.memtest.org and let us know your results! If both modules fail when tested individually, then I would suggest testing in multiple slots, to rule out a failing DIMM slot.

The system refuses to POST with only one stick in (any) slot (including the a1 slot closest to the proc, and the b1 slot which the mobo manual says to use for only one stick)... I would assume this is because it's a dual channel set. I tried this earlier, with one of my previous sets as well, with the same result (with my previous mobo).

 

BIOS settings were at default before this happened, btw... and were set at 2.75v.

 

Any other possibilties?

If you have had the same results with two different motherboards, then lets get the memory replaced! Please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.”

 

No, it was a previous pair of memory with a previous motherboard. Both were RMA'd.

 

I'd try a different PSU, or double check the mobo installation to the case (grounding issue maybe).

Thanks for pointing that out Wired. If both modules are consistently failing at the same time, then I would agree with Wired. It would be unlikely that both modules would fail at the same time, unless something else was causing them to fail. Since you have already replaced the board, I would say the PSU would be next most likely cause.
