Corsair HX620 hissing/whining

Hi, about four months ago I bought a corsair HX620W power supply from scan.co.uk.

Within the previous month it has started making a faint high frequency electrical noise. It is louder when in game, e.g. crysis

I read some other forums before coming here and found that it might be a leaking capacitor causing the noise.

This noise never used to happen.

My psu is positioned on the bottom of my case upside down with the fan facing upwards, even so I guess this wouldn't cause the problem. I took out the gpu and it deffinately sounds to be coming from inside the psu itself.

I am not overloading it at all and havn't overcloked at all.

The high pitched noise can be heard from the side of the case, an with it off more, I can also just hear it on my chair and it is starting to get annoying.

Is this part ok to be sent back to scan?

thanks, jake :)

Its possible that the PSU is causing the problem, but it is also possible that your card or motherboard could be at the root of the problem. If you have the option, I would test the PSU in a different system to see if you have the same results, or try a different PSU in your own system. If you don't have that option, then we can try replacing the PSU for you (or if its more convenient you can replace the PSU with your reseller), but if you have the same issues with another PSU, then I would suspect some other issue.

I have unplugged the gpu and hard drive, and it is definately the psu making the hissing noise. The high pitched noise is not that loud, but enough to hear and I am pretty sure it didn't make it before. A freind of mine has a tagan psu and it makes a symilar noise - not as loud- and not high pitched, I couldn't test it in my system though. Is it normal for corsair power supplies to make any noises at all?

I am getting ready to send it back, but am not sure whether to or not.

Would you send it back with just this problem? Also I am not sure whether the seller would accept it as faulty, and replace it.

thanks, jake :)

The noise itself would not indicate any functional problem with the PSU, however if it is loud enough to be bothersome, then we would want to replace the unit for you. Please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.”
