2 pairs of TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF & Asus Crosshair II Formula Problem

Recommended Posts

Hey Ram Guy!

Got a problem that I cant figure out and thought you most likely can help. I have a Asus Crosshair II MB and 4 sticks of Corsair CM2x2048-8500c5d all marked with 2.10v ver1.1 that were purchased as 2 kits of Twin2x4096-8500c5df. I orriginally had them installed in the Asus MB with Bios v.0503 and with mostly default settings other than DDR2 volts set to 2.1v and running 4 seagate hd as Raid 0+1 thru the on board controler. I am also running 2 EVGA 280 video cards with SLI Linked and Vista 64 but this is not were my problem is.

I noticed that the Corsairs were being run at 800mhz running in single channel mode. No matter what I did I could not even with OC the processor get the memeory to see 1066mhz dual channel. Some settings caused the MB not to post beyond the processor and if if were not going to accept the settings would lock up on the memeory check in post.

I decieded to upgrade the MB Bios the latest version 1003 and this went without a problem. MB posted once locked up and no matter what I set the MB bios to even default will not post beyond the memory check unless I remove the 2 memory modules in the white holders. As long as only 2 modules are installed in the blue slots I can change settings in bios and get past post. I have taken all the modules out and installed them one at a time in slot 0 and able to boot and make changes in the bios and boots Vista 64. I can have 2 modules in and with that any 2 of the 4 without any problem but as soon as I install the 3rd bios locks on the memory test even with MB defaulted to factory settings.

Can you shed some light on what I have missed or what I need to make this MB reconized all 4 modules at the same time? Any ideas on settings that should be made?

Insert two sticks and shut the system down. Enter the BIOS and drop your DRAM speed from 1066Mhz to 800Mhz. It is advised to drop the bandwidth when populating with four DRAM slots. The memory controller can issue errors with a four bank run at the full speed of a two bank run. Keep in mind that your Memory Controller voltage is locked to the Vcore on AM2 so raise the CPU Vcore from Auto to 1.25v to increase the memory controller voltage concurrently. You would do well to increase your Vcore off of Auto even in stock when populating with four DRAM slots. Set memory to Unganged Mode. Do NOT overclock the system first. Phenom and 8GB with an overclock is not the way to go in the beginning. Get the system to work with the 8GB first, then work to an overclock. Be certain to use a 2T command rate. Lastly Phenom can be problematic with divisors, liking some and disliking others so play around with divisors, and test as many settings as you can.

The issue is the memory controller and a population of all four banks at the full speed of a two bank run. This issue is across the board with both Nvidia and Intel chipset based boards.

Keep in mind that often issues arise in the longer term when running a four bank population at the full speed of a two dram bank population. The issues seldom damage the DRAM. They damage the on CPU memory controller (AMD) which has a harder time keeping up with the demands of a four DRAM slot population being run as fast as a two DRAM slot population. Those who want to be secure in their system either purchase a single kit of the DRAM capacity that the four singles have or they move to a higher bandwidth DRAM and drop the bandwidth. I also advise it as I have personally seen the issues that can and often do arise with a four DRAM slot population running at the full speed of a single kit speed.

DerekT, well I followed your info and I can now boot with the 8 gigs and system is stable. Thank you for the help and you are right on with your info. A couple of last question...(Im sure you hear that more than once a day)!

I read in a previous post you dont work for Corsair, so since you are giving tech help free I would like to buy you a beer. You have a paypal or something?

2nd, where can I go to get info/help on the Asus board. There is tons of stuff I dont understand in the Crosshair bios as what its for or how it affects what it does. I know in the past there had been a Asus fourm and got great info but it does not seem to be there anymore.

Again thanks for the help! Yours is a million % better than the company I got the board from and your was free! (Only had to buy Corsair Memory)

I have purchased Corsair for my last 3 computers and got my brother and a few friends hooked!

LOL - No thanks my friend. I come here to help because I came here more than a few years ago with my own issues and RAM GUY helped me out when I was quite a handful. (I'm Still Quite a Handful :p: ) I decided to come here and help out for that reason. Your thanks is more than enough :D:

I would check a few forums. Xtremesystems is a good one for research, for example:

There's a few hundred pages for you to peruse :p:

You're very welcome :D:
