Because they were sold out of the Biostar I had to go back to the Asus. Isn't the Asus a better board and less likely to have problems? Oh. I use to do UT bigtime but got disgusted with the obvious use of aimbots and cheats. Did WarBirds for a long time and was in a squadron and everything. I haven't touched a game in 2-3 years. Picked up Wolfenstein and blew the dust off and got the bug again. Any FPS that is real good these days or flying multiperson or other multi person that doesn't charge by the minute?I almost forgot. I need a range to work in for CPU voltage. I imagine the manual will tell me what is default.

For the 45nm chips, I would set to 1.38v and test to 3.4Ghz. Then, if stable, lower the voltage incrementally with testing. When you find instability, raise the core voltage two increments and retest. That's about it. I play Bioshock right now. I didn't really like Crysis all that much and I enjoy all of the F.E.A.R. games. Mass Effect is a game I have just bought and installed but am playing Bioshock on max difficulty right now so it will still take some time to finish. I don't like strategy games, I think more than enough at work so FPS are the games I appreciate.

To bad I didn't think to check this earlier. The place that had thr 8800 card also had that Biostar for maybe $10 more than The Egg. They also had a huge selection of Asus boards. I'm sure they probably had the CPU as well. You were saying that my current Biostar wouldn't take much hard use. Something about PCB's. We paid more for the Asus but aren't you getting better quality? I'll quit pestering you as soon as this puppy is up and flying but advice like yours is not available around here for love or money. Now if you want to know how to birth a cow... :-) HolyCow! This card can set FSB from 200 to 800 in 1mhz steps. !! Read where one guy said if he changed either RAM voltage or CPU voltage it wouldn't boot. WTF !! Amazing. The whole order from Egg and from Tiger is coming in today. And that was regular shipping. I can start to abuse it this evening !!

Yes, the ASUS board is a better board. There is no doubt. You will get a better overclock, have more settings as well. I was saying that if you want to save money, then don't cheap out on the video card, drop the processor and the BIOSTAR board for the money is a good deal. So, if you can afford the 8800GT and the ASUS board along with the E5200, then you will have a very fast budget system.

Either me or the mobo fried my 2 gigs of good RAM. I should have waited for the Biostar. I think I made a math error and the stupid board wasn't able to protect my RAM from stupid me. C'est la guerre. (That's the war :-)

Remove the motherboard from all components. Remove the power cord. Remove the DRAM. Remove the CMOS Battery. Let sit for an hour. Replace the battery, components, power cord. Insert a single stick of DRAM in the slot closest to the CPU and restart.

Results?

As it turns out only one of the matched pair is bad. Maybe it just went bad on it's own. I got Memtest to check the one that boots. You don't know how long the warranty is on XMS2? If the one turns out to be O.K. can I send it to the factory to find it a new mate? I will try your test with the board in the AM. I haven't slept in 2 nites fighting with these components and being generally stumped.

They are under Corsair's Lifetime Warranty. You will need to post in the Customer Care Section and RAM GUY will help you

Finally passed out and slept. In a capsule, the mobo would not boot out of the box and I couldn't be sure if there was a post code or not. I jumped it to clear the CMOS and it eventually booted to the BIOS. It was reading the CPU as 2.5gig but would only run it at 2.0. I tried to get the board to run things at 3.0 but it got worse and it would take 30-40 min of messing to boot. The bios would not save any changes even just saying it was plug and play. Put the old mobo back and got a clear post of bad RAM. Put my old RAM in to the old mobo and it booted fine. Then added one Corsair at a time and figured out one of the sticks had gone bad. I could try the old stick and the good Corsair stick in the new mobo and see what happens. UPDATE: Can't try to boot the ASUS untill I get another CPU fan. Two of the little hold down tits for the fan are missing. Then my old mobo would'nt see a USB keyboard. Don't know what I did that cured it but it least it booted. I'm about to throw the whole works off the bridge and me behind it :-) Got a Cooler Master fan OTW for $8.50 and free shipping. Would have liked a better fan but gotta go with the cheapest. The Arctic was only $27. It's a PIA being poor! And both sticks of RAM are bad :-(

I need to decide whether to get my nice new Corsair Ram back and risk it in the possibly bad Asus mobo. The Asus wouldn't boot even before I got my greasy claws into the BIOS. That could be because the RAM was already half bad. If I do, what multiplier should I set with what to get about 3000 which that board should have no trouble reaching if the board is OK. I got an RMA to send it back and swap it for the TG31-A7. It sounds easier to overclock therefore safer for a retard. Hank

11 X 266 would be my first try.

Great! Only things is I don't have a computer to stay in touch while I'm doing the switch. If you email your # I get free unlimited LD thru the Cable Co. I think the last time was a stack up of errors but when I'm ready to jump I will have all new stuff. I've built 12 computers w/o a glitch and then everything goes to hell.

Only a Dummy would buy his/her RAM from Micron. BTW that thing about using a radio station to act as a ping repeater was a fluke. I got so sick of getting 2 megs down when I'm paying for 10 that I had Charter upgrade me to 16 meg service for durn 25 bucks a month. :-(

LOL - Micron makes great DRAM ICs. They are an OEM (Original Entry Manufacturer) and their ICs are found in every major DRAM companies modules. The Micron D9s do not seem to work well with newer chipsets as they are very high end modules. Corsair 6400C3, 8500C5, 8800C5, 9136C5, 100000C5 are populated with Micron D9s for the 1GB modules. I have used their modules often. :D: I have one set of Corsair Twin2X2048-8500C5s version 1.2 Micron D9s left. Since I migrated to 2GB modules a while back, these ones are still in a box. :D:

Actually I was just kidding about Micron 'cause I've always heard them well spoken of. Corsair's PR folks must be doing a good job 'cause I always look for Corsair to begin with. BTW they got my crashed 1024-C4's a couple of days ago and said they will let me know what they are going to do. The Egg has really been most helpful in all respects so they have a definite sold customer here unless somebody kills their price or they don't have what I want. Since that Cooler Master($8 and free ship) was so cheap I think I'll get an Arctic at the end of the month anyhoo.

I just happened to think (unusual), I wonder if this old Geforce 2 relic is getting me killed in FPS's due to video delay...like a built in lag. Not huge but everyone doesn't have an aimbot. On that Asus board I couldn't set the higher RAM voltage because it was in front of me but instead of just 1.95V to 2.15V, it was split into three different settings written in Greek. Also do you think a gaming mouse is worth the extra bucks. I was initially thinking of a cordless mouse but I guess that is building in a delay...probably only micro-seconds but it all adds up. I been looking at all the gaming mice and it's amazing. What I need is a pistol shaped device that I would shoot directly at the screen.

The time draws nigh for assembly and it's crazy after building 13 computers without a hitch that this one should have become so problematic. I heard the Arctic requires "some assembly". Any tips there? Also on the Biostar TG31-A7 board is setting the RAM voltage just one setting from 1.9V to ? Is the CPU voltage change also straightforward. On the Asus I had no idea what they were talking about. Wish me luck and thanx for your patience. Hank.

I notice you don't have thermal paste down the center of the CPU. I already have Geil's golden colored paste completely covering the top. I hope that wasn't what caused problems. Can alchohol be used to remove the old? I notice the Egg has Silver remover and I imagine that could be used on the Geil. How do you apply thermal paste. Pinky tip or Q-Tip or ?

The setup is as you laid it out. The E5200 CPU, the good Arctic fan, a stronger power supply but once I looked, the one I have is just as strong, an XFX 8800 GS card for PCI-E, the TG31A-A7 mobo, and of course my now new Corsair Twin 2x1024-6400C4 Ram. When Corsair tech emailed me they said they were returning Twin 2x1024-6400C4 G. What is the G? Thanx as always.

I hope it's dead simple assembling the Arctic fan.
