rswelter
I have a new 16gb flash voyager. I have tried to transfer some large files on to it and receive an error msg that the destination drive is full! I have done a reformat and size available is 15.3gb in fat32. do i need to switch to ntfs? regards,
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 2, 2008 Yes that is a limitation of the Fat32 file system the largest file you can have in fat32 is about 3.7 Gig.
rswelter
thanks for the earlier reply, what is the right way to format over to ntfs, will this method work to switch back to fat32 if needed? regards,
colinbgood
To format for NTFS: Open an explorer window that shows your flash drive. Right click on the flash drive and select Format from the menu. Set it to NTFS if you want to be able to store indiviual files greater than 3.7gigs. Quick format should be fine, though some drives do seem to run a little faster if a full format is done, I don't know about voyager in this case. I use the quick format and I dont see any performance decrease. Just a warning though, any file on the flash drive will be erased ANY time you format. NTFS can hold files far bigger than your flash drives capacity. In my opinon there really is not reason to go back to FAT32, true NTFS uses a little more space for drive information (thats why it can have indiviual files > 3.7gig), but I think you will only lose a few megabytes. The only other reason to go back would be if you need the stick to work on an operating system that does not support NTFS, like older windows systems, but XP and VISTA both support NTFS. And yes, should you want to change it back you do the same thing, except you choose FAT32. Cheers -CB
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 6, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 6, 2008 Format (X:) /FS:NTFS /U (X=the drive letter assigned to the Flash Voyager) And please note you may have to change the properties of the drive in device manager to non removable to format to NTFS
rswelter
Format (X:) /FS:NTFS /U (X=the drive letter assigned to the Flash Voyager) And please note you may have to change the properties of the drive in device manager to non removable to format to NTFS it worked, thought i did have to go to device mgr as you said and i changed properties from quick removal to performance. this allowed the change to ntfs. when using the ntfs am i restricted to using the safe hardware removal option? would it be alright to change back this option now that i have formatted? also if i want to switch back to fat what is the command line script. many thanks rswelter
