stackley
For my new build I bought Corsair Twin2X2048-8500C5DF to go with an ASUS P5E WS Pro. The first set I bought one stick was DOA. I RMA'd it got a replacement set and they seemed to be working for about two months. I started getting the blue screen crashes fairly regularly. I went on Major Geeks and they figured in all probability it was a failed hard drive. So, I order a new hard drive and when I tried to install the new operating system, more blue screens. I then figured maybe it was the memory again. I tried to run memtest-86, it only got as far as about 14% through the 2nd pass and froze up, but the first time I ran it I had 80 errors, the second time 2076 errors, the third time the same 2076 error in the up top summary, but the running test showed 32,000 errors. Before I go ahead and RMA it yet again, are the any other thoughts as to what it could be?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted September 25, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted September 25, 2008 Please make sure that you have the latest bios and load setup defaults and then set the memory Voltage to 2.1 Volts then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org to be sure one is not failing. If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with some MB's (Mostly ASUS) you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.
stackley
Forgive my stupidity, but as I do not have an operating system on the computer yet...how can I update the Bios? The other adjustment you mentioned are all in the Bios?
Wired
Use a different computer to download the BIOS update and use a boot device to update it. You know, the old school way :)
stackley
OK, I updated the bios, checked the voltage and latency settings and they are all correct. I disabled USB legacy. I then did try to run the memtest and again it froze about 14% into pass 2. I have not had the opportunity to try and run it one stick at a time, will do that this evening. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted September 26, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted September 26, 2008 Yes please test the modules one at a time and let us know if you have any more questions!
stackley
I have about had it and I think it is the MB. I ran each stick individually, again with USB legacy disabled I can only get about 18% through Pass 2 before it freezes up, but both showed errors. I have done some more research and it seems that the ASUS P5E motherboard seems to have lots of memory problems
stackley
OK, I found a newer version of memtest and it ran all the way through. Massive memory errors on both sticks. I had bought new memory, installed it, ran the test and all is well. Could there something that is damaging the memory? They ran fine for over two months and then shot. I have not installed the included fans, as I am concerned about putting metal clips on the MB, but the sticks are right in front of a Zalman 9500 fan so should be pulling a lot of air over them. Wired
Running the memory w/ 2.1v?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted September 30, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted September 30, 2008 Let's get them replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace them. But if that happens again I would get the MB checked.
