Need some hardware advice to get my overclock goals achieved.

Board:evga 790i FTW

CPU: QX9770 or QX9650 - narrowed it down to one of these two

My Goal:

I would like to have 1800mhz FSB as well as the RAM at 1800mhz - linked and stable. I would like the system itself to be at or around 4ghz. For these cpu's I believe this is a minimal overclock correct? I want to find the happy medium where i can run 24/7 without shortening the life of my hardware.

Question is which RAM do you think I should go with with the board and goals I have? Corsair, Corsair or Corsair? 1600, 1800 or 2000? I am planning on having 4gb total (2x2gb)

I commend you guys, gettin all this stuff straight is overwhelming to say the least, and I dont even have my hardware yet!! I am trying to get it right the first time and have all my probs be config related and not hardware related once I get everything in my box.

This will be air cooled with an Antec 1200 with full fan complement and a Thermaltake Ultra 120 extreme cooler w/attached fan @ 1800rpm

Thanks all, your knowledge is so appreciated.

PS I should add if anyone has specific experience with this board and hardware I would love to know what settings on the mobo you feel would achieve this, timings, voltage, etc.

It's not very easy to get > 425FSB (and some don't even make that) with Quad Core 45nm C0C1 revision products.

I advise 10 X 400Mhz with 1600Mhz on the DRAM 1600C7 is more than enough. 4Ghz is a 1000Mhz overclock on the QX9650 and 800Mhz overclock on the QX9750. If you are not running water (or more extreme methods) cooling, you will find that the CPU's get pretty hot after 3.8Ghz and the necessary voltages to run them are far higher after that spot.

If I was you I would look for the Q9650 which is an E0 revision and has a higher FSB ability. If I did not have this one, I would buy the Q9650 now. The E0 revision is far cooler cooler than the QX9650. It has a 95W TDP compared to the 130W TDP bracket of C0/C1 so there will be major benefits to its Overclock ability.

A far better stepping and overclock than the far more expensive QX9650 so unless you are going with high end water or more extreme methods, the unlocked multiplier is not going to make a great difference with the extreme processors.

This is the Q9650. Smoking CPU.

Sweet, ok thanks Derek, you sold me on the CPU and just saved me $1000 , The Q9650 sounds like it will be perfect the way you presented it. I wont be water cooling, but will have the Thermalright ultra 120 extreme installed.

What corsair ram do you suggest to go along with this? Im trying to figure out why people get the 1800 or 2000 when it seems from what i read on various forums that the 1600 overclocks to those speeds anyway. Confused on the whole ram thing, but this is the last part of my equation.

And wow 489 on that, amazing. Let me know if you think 1800 is possible with air, if not, 1600 will have to do.

Awesome help man thank you, this is all startin to come together for me. I was starting to think I would be staring at my empty Antec case forever.

As do I and it is a great cooler. I don't want the trouble and time for extreme clocks as they are too much work on the upkeep.

It is a guaranteed speed. Intel will not go under a 1:1 ratio, so if you buy 1600 hoping for 1800 and don't get it, you will not be a happy camper. I wouldn't anyway. Some also have had issues with overclocking DRAM and do not want to overclock the DRAM. Intel appreciates the bandwidth more than the timings so I wouldn't worry too much about C7 vs C9 when you are clocking up.

I think that you can get higher than 1600Mhz on the Q9650 CPU. The E0 seems quite robust. It might take a bit of fiddling with the BIOS termination voltages, FSB voltages, etc, which do not have to normally be touched much at all when at 400FSB or lower.

You're welcome. Let us know how that Q9650 works out. I'll probably sell my QX9650 off soon and buy one of those Q9650s myself.

Cool thanks Derek I will keep you guys posted for sure.

So just to make sure I understand correctly, with the RAM you are basically saying if I am going to overclock to 1800, I should get the 1800 ram, otherwise it is not guaranteed, am I understanding that right?

Also it looks like the EVGA 790i FTW DIGITAL will be out soon, I am gonna hold out for that board.

Thanks

It depends on how you look at things. I don't take the chance if I want a certain speed. I then can overclock the DRAM after. In other words, I would buy the 1800 DRAM if it is guaranteed to make 1800Mhz. Then I would see just how high a clocking I can get with the processor and it. See? My baseline is 1600 and I want to see how much more I can get, then I buy the 1600 and begin to test the overclock, accepting what I get. If my baseline is 1800 then I buy 1800 and try for 1900/2000 on the overclock.

But some people would ask others how high they got with their 1600Mhz DRAM and when they hear 1800Mhz then they would buy that DRAM. Some of those then post angrily that it didn't make what the others said it did. Well DUH!!! See what I mean. I don't take chances. I love the overclock and wanted more than a 400Mhz FSB on this QX9650 I bought. Some make higher. I didn't! It's not Intel's fault. If I got angry, it would be my fault for expecting to get what others got. It's a chance thing and a dice toss.

Such is life. :)

Cool gotcha, makes sense, thanks. I will stick with the 1800 since I am sure I prob cant get much further without water cooling. If I can find 2000 for the same price I will snag that, give me a little more overhead.

I am thinking about getting those heat sink for the ram that thermalright has, anyone have any experience with these? As good as their cpu coolers? or is a srong wind tunnel inside the case enough for the ram?

Thanks again Derek, seriously your advice in all this is so appreciated.

It's hard to say how effective they would be in your system. I would first purchase the DRAM and test the overclock of the CPU, then the overclock of the DRAM. Then see what what cooling, if any, would be needed on the overclock of the DRAM. DDR3 runs pretty cool already and the maximum warrantied is 2.0v and there have been more than a few people seeing damage at > 2.1v so I wonder if you would need cooling. Your fingers will tell you though.
