VS1GB667D2 on Asus P5B SE

Recommended Posts

I use 2 x the VS1GB667D2 on my Asus P5B SE mainboard on a Windows XP 32-bit, in combination with a Asus 8600GT Top (256MB) and a E6850 Dual Core.

I bought this memory in november 2007 and got a problem right away. Sometimes it just wouldn't boot. The LCD monitor didnt lite up and you hear the HD drives for a little while but you could hear that it didnt boot XP at all.

This happened with my old proc, the Pentium D 925 3.0 Ghz. I solved this problem myself by adjusting the RAM frequency to 667 Mhz instead of AUTO. From then on it almost never failed booting again. But to be honest normally you shouldn't have to manually adjust this as this mainboard is fully compatible with the memory.

The computer run fine though, untill past week when i installed my Intel Dual Core E6850. The computer starts to freeze every time again and again. I manually put the timing on 5-5-5-15 (the factory specs), but even then it would freeze. I tried everything, put the FSB to 333 Mhz, manually adjust the Multiplier to 9 x instead of auto but still nothing...freeze freeze and freeze again. Memtest wouldt even start it would freeze right away.

After that i did put all my bios settings to automatic. The computer runs fine and doesnt freeze anymore. But whats the problem?! The mainboard puts the memory back to PC4300 (533 Mhz) instead of PC5300 (667 Mhz) and mostly i have to boot the PC twice before it starts.

Is this a memory problem or a mainboard problem? The proc is right i can tell you for sure.

EDIT: Memory wasn't the problem bringing my mainboard back

Is that the motherboard that housed the Pentium 4? If so, let's clear out the BIOS from previous hardware recognition as there may be some corruption due to previous hardware and the BIOS enumeration of the new hardware. First download these utilities.

Download Memtest86+ V2.01 from--->

Download CPU-z from
.

Burn the Memtest ISO image to a CD.

  1. Shut the system down
  2. Remove the power cord
  3. Remove the CMOS Battery
  4. Set the CMOS_CLR Jumper to On
  5. Press the power button for 10 seconds
  6. Let sit for 10 minutes
  7. Set the CMOS_CLR Jumper to Off
  8. Insert one stick of DRAM in Slot 1 (closest to the CPU) and Slot 3
  9. Insert the CMOS Battery
  10. Insert the Power Cord
  11. Restart the system
  12. Enter the BIOS
  13. Load Default Settings
  14. Save Default Settings and Exit
  15. Restart the System

Enter your BIOS. Set to these values.

[b]JumperFree Configuration[/b]

AI Overclocking = Manual
CPU Frequency = 333Mhz
PCI Express Frequency = 100Mhz
Memory Voltage = 1.9V
PCI Clock Synchronization Mode = 33.33Mhz
Spread Spectrum = Disabled
CPU Clock Spectrum = Disabled
Legacy USB Support = Disabled (For Memtest, enable otherwise)

[b]Configure Advanced CPU settings[/b]

Ratio CMOS setting = 9
C1E Support = Enabled
Hardware Prefetcher = Enabled
Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch = Enabled
Max CPUID Value Limit = Disabled
Vanderpool Technology = Enabled
CPU TM Function = Enabled
Exectute Disable Bit = Enabled
Core Multi-Processing = Enabled
Enhanced Intel Speedstep = Enabled

[b]Advanced Chipset Settings[/b]

[b]NorthBridge Configuration[/b]

Memory Remap Feature = Enabled
DRAM Frequency = DDR2-667Mhz [color="DarkRed"](EDITED)[/color]
Configure DRAM by SPD = Enabled
DRAM 1N Mode Select = Disabled
Memory Hole = Disabled

Run Memtest for two full passes, then (If Stable), enter Windows and post screenshots of CPU-z's CPU, Memory and SPD tabs.

Results?

Enter your BIOS. Set to these values.

Code:

JumperFree Configuration

AI Overclocking = Manual Check

CPU Frequency = 333Mhz Check

PCI Express Frequency = 100Mhz Check

Memory Voltage = 1.9V Check

PCI Clock Synchronization Mode = 33.33Mhz Option not available in my asus P5B SE

Spread Spectrum = Disabled If you mean PCIe Spread Spectrum, then check

CPU Clock Spectrum = Disabled Check

Legacy USB Support = Disabled (For Memtest, enable otherwise) Check

Configure Advanced CPU settings

Ratio CMOS setting = 9 Check

C1E Support = Enabled Check

Hardware Prefetcher = Enabled Check

Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch = Enabled Check

Max CPUID Value Limit = Disabled it's lighted gray and says 6FB, cannot change this

Vanderpool Technology = Enabled Check

CPU TM Function = Enabled Check

Exectute Disable Bit = Enabled Check

Core Multi-Processing = Enabled Check

Enhanced Intel Speedstep = Enabled Option not available in my P5B SE

Advanced Chipset Settings

NorthBridge Configuration

Memory Remap Feature = Enabled Check

DRAM Frequency = DDR2-800Mhz Check

Configure DRAM by SPD = Enabled Check

DRAM 1N Mode Select = Disabled Check

Memory Hole = Disabled Check

Run Memtest for two full passes, then (If Stable), enter Windows and post screenshots of CPU-z's CPU, Memory and SPD tabs.

Results?

I did everything you wrote...reset the bios, after i did reset the bios i had to boot twice before it did boot at all. The first two times it did shut off directly. The third time it says...CMOS is wrong/faulty or something like that.

After the thrid reboot i was able to enter the bios and did load all the default settings. Save and exit. Then i entered the bios again and changed everything as you wrote, see the red lighted above! Some options were not in my menu or i couldnt change them.

Results are really bad, MEMTEST 2.01 freezes with test 2 or 3 directly.

I think something isnt right either, because memtest says this about the memory frequency and timing:

RAM: 416 Mhz (DDR832) / CAS: 5-5-5-10 Dual-Channel.

I did download CPUz before and it gave the same timing as memtest does: 5-5-5-10 (and i thought CPUz added "1T" to it.

Sorry but still freezing almost right away.

Again a strange thing i did forgot to mention above...When i tell the mainboard the use 800 Mhz, on reboot the bios still says its PC5300.

Anyway, i set it to 667 Mhz and the bios still says its PC5300. Thats the good thing, the bad ofcourse is that Memtest hangs right away.

Memtest tells the same about the mem again:

RAM: 416 Mhz (DDR832) / CAS: 5-5-5-10

Just to try i adjust the setting 'Configure DRAM by SPD to disabled en put the values to the factory specified values 5-5-5-15. Then in Memtest it says CAS: 5-4-4-10

Anyway is this a mem problem you think or a mainboard problem. What else can i do to reveal this difficult problem?

Back again...tested one mem module a time and with the first i had load of errors right away and with the second after 25% it jumped back to 1% and then it hung again (with no errors).

p.s. I'm noticing that the original factory stickers are still on, is that a prob?

EDIT: bios version 1001, the latest

1 addition to my last reply:

I didnt mention before that i did run memtest also when i configured my bios completely automaticly. The Bios then clocked down the mem to PC4300 but i didnt get eny memtest errors nor it didnt hang. I only was able to do one test at that time and not two.

Hope you can help me i badly need this computer for work and privat use also.

thanks again!

  • 3 months later...

Thanks for all!

The mem has been replaced but i'm still encoutering the same probs.

Brought my computer to pc store and they did a flash and that would do the trick they told me. Unfortunately i was getting more and more BSOD's when days pass. When booting the mainboard still automaticly turns the pc on, off and on again. Sometimes my lcd doesn't turn on when booting.

Setting back my mem tot PC4300 did solve the BSDOD's again not the rest.

Brought my computer back again yesterday so hopefully this time it'll be fixed.

I'll post the result just for other who might encounter the same probs.
