Extremely low reading and writing speeds on new Flash Voyager 16 GB

Hello,

A friend and me just bought and received a pair of Corsair Flash Voyager USB 2.0 16 GB memory sticks (instantaniously formatted to NTFS). Unfortunetely, there seems to be a problem with them. The following is their speed levels:

Read: 20-21 - then drops to 7-8 MB/s (after a minute or two)

Write: 45-55 - then, as with read, drops to 7-8 MB/s (also after a minute or two)

Why are these speed levels so low? And why do they start so high?

The USB sticks only do the massive jumps during the first minute of transfer on some computers (meaning, my own - haven't tested specifically for jumps on other machines).

Thank you for your help!

PS: Tests peformed on two Windows Vista Home Premium/Ultimate (USB 2.0) and one Windows XP (USB 1.0) pc's - all 32 bit.

Something weird just happened. This is the CMD log (translated from Danish):

C:\Users\USER>format e:
Insert a new disc in drive E:
og press ENTER when ready...
File system is NTFS.
Checking 15679 MB
[Here, it reached something between 35 and 40 % before aborting opperation]
The media being formattet has been removed or become invalid.
Formatting cancelled.

C:\Users\USER>format e:
Insert a new disc in drive E:
og press ENTER when ready...
Error in IOCTL call.

C:\Users\USER>

Then, I reinserted the USB ben. Windows instantaniuously displayed a message:

Title: Microsoft Windows

Headline: You must format the disc in drive E: before you can use it.

Content: Do you want to format it?

Button 1: Format the disc

Button 2: Cancel

I pressed cancel and went back to CMD:

C:\Users\USER>format e:
Insert a new disc in drive E:
og press ENTER when ready...
File system is RAW.
The new file system is FAT32.
Checking 15679 MB
^C percent checked.
[i'm changing the file system to NTFS here]
C:\Users\USER>format e: /FS:NTFS /V:USB-pen
Insert a new disc in drive E:
og press ENTER when ready...
File system is RAW.
The new file system is NTFS.
Checking 15679 MB
14 percent checked.

Now, I'll let it continue formatting and see what happens.

Okay, now it works. The drive has been fully formatted and tested. I did the following in HDBENCH:

Select E:Removable as drive

Confirmed that size was set to 100 MB

Pressed the RAM block icon

The results are:

ALL: 22752

Read: 185833

Write: 119627

Read&Write: 240573

I don't really understand much of these results (except the Read and Write values may be transfer rates in HB/s (100 B/s)) so I'll be waiting for your reply.

The syntax to format the drive for this test should be:

Format (X:) /FS:FAT32 /U (X=the drive letter assigned to the Flash Voyager)

But the results you have got would suggest the drive is performing OK:

Read: 185833

Write: 119627

But please run the test as posted and let me know the results.
