4gb with Striker Extreme but different revisions.

Morning Guys,

I have been running a Asus Striker Extreme board with 2 GB of Dominator memory(2.1volt)(v 1.2 06431601) for a while and for awhile I have been thinking of adding another 2GB.

I have just received the extra 2GB and have put them in(v 4.1 1301)

the problem I'm having is the new pair started off not posting then after a bit of tweaking they would BSOD the Vista.

If I put the old pair in the system works fine no issues but if I put the extra new 2GB in the system just crashes constantly. Now I would have liked to have bought just a straight 4GB but I don't really have the money and to be honest although I'm no stranger to the silly little things the Striker board does I still am wondering why buying another 2GB of the same memory (albeit a different revision) is causing me such a ball ache?

I have tried various things on the forums e.g upping voltage on the NB etc etc unlinking the memory which helped the memory to post but as for running an OS it doesnt.

Any help would be appreciated?

It is never advised to mix and match different versions of DRAM.

Version 1.xxx is a Micron D9 Based IC and Version 4.xxx is a PSC Based IC. Microns do not play well with other ICs and it is doubtful you will get them to respond well. Micron also have different secondary timings and voltage requirements. The necessary voltage for your 1.xxx is 2.2v and the PSC is 2.1v.

You can try to get them to play nice together by placing the PSC in slots 1 and 3, Microns in slots 2 and 4 and drop the DRAM speed to 800Mhz with 4-4-4-12 2T and 2.2V. but I doubt it will work for you.

You would do well to sell the DRAM and purchase 2 X 2048 of DRAM. Your issues will be over. Micron has ceased making Micron D9's a long time ago.

Humm thanks for the reply

Will Corsair take my old ones and replace them with the new revision?

I only ask because nowhere whilst I was buying these did anyone say these might not be compatible!

I would have gone for the 2x2 but unfortunately money is an issue and I'm having to these things piece meal. Since when has been putting memory in a machine been such a tiresome affair, you used to be able to stick any old memory in a machine and you had a good chance of it working!

I'm sorry if my reply seems a little twatish as I know your trying to help but I've spent a lot of time trying to get this to work and to be told that it may not work at all and you only get told this after you have brought the items.

Again thanks for the reply.

That's a question for RAM GUY. I can't see how companies could or would support such a thing though. You just bought the two sticks. Can you not take them back? RAM is really quite cheap right now and you can sell your previous 1GB sticks.

At any rate, good luck in whatever you choose though. Keep in mind, I do not work for Corsair, and have absolutely no say in such situations.

For future reference. DRAM is manufactured with such tight specifications that you would do well to research prior to purchasing any DRAM with an eye to future upgradeable choices. It is best to buy it all at once and be certain of compatibility. With DRAM, the revision integer is the key. The version X.yyyy will be fabbed with changes in the decimal .yyyy of the same IC and will work with other sticks of the same X. In other words, version 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 will work together. It's never advised to mix and match the integer ie. version 1.xxx with 2.xxx.

Even your voltages for these module are different. With DDR, these issues occurred as well. Samsung TCCD did not work with BH5. DDR400 BH5 and DDR400 TCCD would not work together and that was many years ago.

The DRAM that usually works together well is the JEDEC Vanilla DRAM and your 8500's are past JEDEC Standards which only go up to 6400C5 at 1.8v. Anything past that, with DDR2, one needs to research prior to purchasing.

Humm well it looks like its down to a faulty stick!!!

I can boot off everyone mixed or same rev with everyone apart from one stick of the new stuff, as soon as I put it into the board the Bios doesnt even post, put the other new one in it works fine!

Whats the process do I send it back to the place i brought it from or send it directly back to Corsair??

Thx for the help Derek,

Sig?

Either way will work, but you may find it quicker to deal with the retail outlet. There is a one way shipping charge if you send to Corsair.

RAM GUY will give you the necessary details should you wish to RMA through Corsair.
