Mixing memory kits

P5Per

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, am pretty new to the world of RAM upgrades!

I have a P4 3.4GHz system which is about 3 years old now. I'm planning to upgrade the RAM pretty soon, and want to make sure I get the most out of the upgrade.

The system has an Asus P5P800 board fitted with 512mb of Corsair RAM, not sure exactly of the spec without opening it up again, but pretty sure it's done with 2 sticks of 256 using the Valuselect VS512MB400C3 kit.

I'm planning to add 2Gb using the Valueselect VS2GBKIT400C3 (2x1Gb sticks) to upgrade, as I have 2 free slots. My main question is: will I be able to mix the 2x256 sticks with the 2x1Gb sticks to give me 2.5Gb RAM? Or will I get better performance if I bin the old RAM and just install the 2Gb kit?

Twinx2048-3200C2 would be the fastest part we still make and will run on that MB if you can set the memory Voltage to 2.75-2.8 Volts. Other wise then yes the Value Select part would be the best choice.
