Bad memory

Recommended Posts

Hi i have 4x1024 memory sticks. I had a lot of reboots and bluescrens so I did a memtest.

I took out all of them and tested 1 memory in every slot and i tryed all 4 of them, and 1 of the memory failed in all slots.

Do you have any advice what to do next ?

On the memory it is printed XMS2-8500 1024MB

byt on the packed it says TWIN2X2048-8500C5D G

With 4 modules DDR667 or DDR800 would be suggested and set the memory Voltage to 2.1 Volts and set the NB/MCH/SPP Voltage to +.05 Volts.

But first please make sure that you have the latest bios and load setup defaults and then set the memory Voltage to 2.1 Volts then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org to be sure one is not failing. If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with some MB's (Mostly ASUS) you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.

And if you do have a failing module you will want to get that set replaced.

what part number do i have ?

the two i have is not on the list =)

CM2X1024-8500C5D (on the ram)

TWIN2X2048-8500C5D G (on the pack box) Here it says it is 2x2048 but i have 2x1024

Do you men i have to replace all 4 of them or just 2 that are in the same box ?

Just the two that came in the same package. If you have 2x 1GB modules, then the part number for the kit is TWIN2X2048-8500C5D, If you have 2x 2GB modules, then the part number would be TWIN2X4096-8500C5D.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS for the board, load setup defaults in the BIOS and then set the following settings manually in the BIOS:

Memory Frequency: 800MHz

Memory Voltage: 2.1v

TCL: 5

TRCD: 5

TRP: 5

TRAS: 15

Command Per Clock: 2T

Test with http://www.memtest.org and let us know your results!

My other par that i had to rma, befor they broken down i had no problem runing all four at 1066.

But the old pair i spec'd to 2.2v and are only getting 2.1 i can think that is a problem. Can i set the volt on each slot ? (I have not seen this myself) Will i burn the new memory of i run them in 2.2v ?

OK

but will the new pair work whith 2.2v or is it meaningless to try. (Will the burn up ?) The cooling in my computer is fairly good

I would set the memory voltage to 2.1v and then test the configuration with http://www.memtest.org. If you do not get any errors then leave it that way. If you do get errors then I would try bumping the memory voltage to 2.2v.
