PSU or RAM problem?

Hi,

I built a new system and was having some problems with it, mostly due to Vista64. Once those were sorted out my system ran fine for a few months. Then Vista started giving me constant RAID error messages, even though all read-write was working fine. Then I started having some crashes, which increased in frequency. This was soon followed by boot problems and then POST problems.

I removed 2 of my 4x1G RAM sticks and everything worked fine again. I did the RAM dance with the 2 removed sticks and found that 1 of them worked in all slots and 1 of them worked in no slots, with some slots worse than others.

I RMA'd the RAM and the system worked fine withe the replacement RAM for about a month. Then I started having crash and boot problems again. I removed the replacement RAM and considered getting a new MB.

Another month later the system had trouble booting up. When it finally did it showed a lot of RAID errors again, followed by crashes and quickly POST errors. I can't get the system to work with any combination of 2x or 1x1G sticks.

Although I had planned on overclocking, I never got around to it due to the history of problems. I also had to turn off all sleep and hibernation modes as the system would crash after waking up and require a hard boot.

People have suggested to me that the problem is my PSU. Right now I think I need to by a new PSU and all new RAM to get my system working again. I think I have an HX620. I don't think I can keep RMAing the RAM :)

Any advice on my PSU suspicions? Thanks.

I would be more suspicious of the motherboard at this point. If you are having multiple modules failing in the board at different times, then I would suggest getting both the memory and the board replaced. I would say based off the information you have given me that the PSU is probably an unlikely cause of the problems you are having.

If you would like us to replace the memory for you, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.”

Thanks for the reply. I have been suspicious of the MB at times too. Obviously the MB is the most painful piece to replace. Ideally there would be some way of ruling out the PSU so I don't have to worry once I replace the MB and RAM.

So I replaced the 4x1G RAM with a 2x2G config. I can reliably boot to the OS now but get a blue screen anytime a service or application tries to access the network. Because I've gone through 3 sets of RAM and now the network controller isn't working I'll be replacing the MB. Hopefully the MB was dying on it's own accord and not due to the PSU.

...assuming I can figure out how to get my RAID0 install working on another MB.
