Memtest error with TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX

I've been having sporadic crashes while playing World of Warcraft. They are crashes to desktop with the error message "the memory at adresss XXX could not be read/written".

I ran Memtest and the module is failing Test 5 (block move) frequently, but not always. I ran it overnight and it would fail 5 cycles out of a total of 8 cycles ran. I'm trying it on another memory slot on the MB right now.

I am running the module at the factory setting of 4-4-4-12 at 2.1V.

This is the second batch of this memory module that I'm using. The first batch had one module fail right out of the box (memtest would just crash), and I RMAed it via Newegg since it was still new.

Any ideas?

Yes, I'm testing the modules one at a time. It failed in 5 of the 8 cycles on test 5 on one slot, and I'm currently running the test on another slot at home (I'm at work heh).

I'm running BIOS version 0703 for the Asus P5Q Pro. I just checked Asus' website and there's a new version 1104 that was released this month. The notes says "Enhance the compatibility with certain memory". I'll give this a try when I get home and post back if it changes things.

So, updated the BIOS to version 1104. No change. I did have an interesting discovery though. Since I only get errors on Test 5, I just ran Memtest on that particular test. If I set the BIOS to "Auto" settings for the RAM (the timing turns out to be 5-5-5-18, voltage not known) I can run through the test just fine. Once I manually set the timings to 4-4-4-12 and voltage to 2.1V, then the error occurs. Again, it doesn't happen every cycle but often enough. I also adjusted the voltage settings between 2.0-2.3V with errors. Here's a summary:

Timing Voltage Errors/# of cycles

Auto (5-5-5-18) Auto (not known) 0/10

4-4-4-12 2.0 5/10

4-4-4-12 2.1 10/19

4-4-4-12 2.2 4/10

4-4-4-12 2.24 2/10

4-4-4-12 2.3 4/5

4-4-4-12 Auto (not known) 16128/3 (No, I'm not kidding)

To ensure that it isn't my mobo that's causing the issue, I tested the other module from this pack (the "good" one) and had no errors at all. I verified both modules in different slots on the mobo, and came to the same conclusion. One of the modules is bad.

Am I missing any information here that might prove my theory wrong? I'm a little worried since this is the second module that has gone bad. Granted the first batch I got from Newegg was bad right out of the box, if my theory is correct I'm worried about the reliability of these parts as part of my configuration. What could cause it to go bad? I didn't test the second batch I got extensively when I got them, so maybe there were errors before but there's no way to prove otherwise now. I've used them for about a month or so.

This will probably end up as an RMA, but can I keep using the "good" module while this is underway? Or do I have to send both pieces back as they're considered one package? That means I'll be without a computer for however long the RMA process takes.

I've submitted a request via the online RMA form. A few questions:

1) Am I responsible for the shipping costs to get the part to Corsair? What about the return shipping?

2) Do I have to return both the modules or can I keep the working one so that I can continue using my system while the RMA is in process?

3) How long does it take to get the part back?

Thanks!

1) Am I responsible for the shipping costs to get the part to Corsair? What about the return shipping?

A: Yes you ship them to us and we will ship the replacements back.

2) Do I have to return both the modules or can I keep the working one so that I can continue using my system while the RMA is in process?

A: Yes you need to get an RMA for what you purchased IE if you got a Twin2x set that is what the RMA should be for and a quantity of two modules.

3) How long does it take to get the part back?

A: Average is about 7-10 Business days at this time.
