Tall Dog
Hello, I have a Dell XPS 630I with an Nvidia 650I Motherboard. The computer came stock with 4gb (4 x 1gb) of 800mhz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM SLI memory which was the fastest memory you could order. I would like to speed things up a little and upgrade the memory to this Corsair Dominator; DDR2-1066 (Dominator-8500C5*4GB*EPP) When I run Corsair Compatibility, it tells me that this memory is fully compatible with my computer. I just want to make sure of this, because according to Dell and Nvidia, 800mhz is the fastest memory supported for my machine, however, you can "overclock" the stock 800mhz memory up to 1066mhz? I am not interested in overclocking, so couldn't I just use 1066mhz memory and then not have to worry about overclocking? Also, if I go with the faster memory, will I have to change the speed in the BIOS or will it detect it automatically? Will I need to go into the BIOS and increase the voltage, or does it usually detect the new memory and adjust the voltage automatically. And finally, is the Dominator series of memory SLI compatible? Thanks for helping a noob.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 19, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 19, 2008 I would not suggest it and I would look up your system on our memory configurator and only use modules that are suggested.

Ram Guy, Please re-read my post. I said that the Corsair Memory Configurator says that 1066MHZ RAM IS compatible with my system. I just want to make sure, because that seems to conflict with what Dell and Nvidia says.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 19, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 19, 2008 We have the Dell XPS 630 listed not the XPS 630I and I am not sure they are the same. But if you have a 1066 FSB CPU with the Nvidia 650 Chipset then they are right DDR800 would be the fastest it will support with out over clocking. And you would have to use our Quad kits or Twin2x4096-8500C5DF if it would allow you to over clock the system.
ramnewbie2
I have essentially the same question. Dell 630 with 2 sticks of 1gb 800 stock memory. intel 9450 processor. Bought the Twin2x4096-8500C5DF (2x2 gb) (recommended by Corsair mem configurator) Can I just pull the two old sticks and place the 2 new sticks in the same slots? Is the fan optional or really recommended if I am not OC'ing/no heavy gaming? As per his prior question, if you could answer this Also, if I go with the faster memory, will I have to change the speed in the BIOS or will it detect it automatically? Will I need to go into the BIOS and increase the voltage, or does it usually detect the new memory and adjust the voltage automatically. And finally, is the Dominator series of memory SLI compatible?Complete newbie question. Is this necessary? Is it very difficult to figure out for a novice? Thanks for your help. Dave Follow up more complicated question. Also consulted mem configurator. If I want to upgrade to vista 64 (unlikely real soon given all the negative vista stories I hear), can I just buy another Twin2x4096-8500C5DF and put it on the remaining 2 dimm slots as mem configurator suggests? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted September 30, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted September 30, 2008 If you have room for the fan I would use it and please check that you have the latest BIOS and load setup defaults then set SLI ready memory to CPU max.
