Big problem with Asus P5E64 WS Evolution

I have just assembled this new system, with a QX9770 and 2x2Gb Corsair TW3X4G1800C8DF, inserted into black slots.

The bios (401) is untouched, everything is set to Auto.

There are some stability problems, so I tested the ram with GoldMemory. It reported errors when both ram sticks were inserted, so I tested them one by one. It looked like one was fine and the other buggy, but then I tested the supposedly buggy one in the other slot and it reported no errors.

So I tested the supposedly good one in the faulty slot and it had errors.

I'm wondering, what can be the cause of this? How come a slot reports good ram and the other reports bad ram? I don't know what to do about it.

With the CPU you have you would need to set the memory frequency at DDR1600 unless you over clock the CPU, what are the exact settings you had set for both CPU and memory?

Actually I didn't set anything manually, I simply went with the defaults. The mobo automatically analyzed the ram and set it to 1800. The fsb is 450, the cpu is 3.4 Ghz so the multiplier must be x8. But everything is set to auto.

Only run the default tests do not set it to run test 9 or 10 which is in the read me file form http://www.x86-secret.com/ or on http://www.memtest.org. Also with most ASUS MB's you have to disable legacy USB support when running any memory test.

I ran default tests, three clean passes. Actually test 9 is in the default tests.

Good info about legacy USB.

The only bad test wit Memtest was when I forgot to plug the power for the memory fans. I got 4 errors in test 5 at the second pass that time. It didn't happen again though after plugging it back on.

It's still not stable. Memtest gives errors once in a while, videogames don't last more than a few minutes before crashing. Big big trouble. Is there no way to make this memory work at its nominal frequency with this board? The memory configurator says it should work. Right now I get no errors in Memtest or GoldMemory (I'm sorry I doubted this software, it has always proved itself to be more thorough by far than Memtest) only if I downclock the ram to 1600.

The Q9770 does not over clock as well as an E8000 series CPU and I would try and lower the FSB Bit but it sounds like the CPU you have just does not like to run at 450 Mhz or you may have some type of voltage issue with the MB and or PSU.

Yes I lowered the FSB to 400 but the Cpu handles quite well a 10x multiplier actually. So I am now testing with 4Ghz cpu and 1600 ram. It surely is better to have the cpu at 4Ghz than ram at 1800 and cpu quite lower than 4Ghz.

I'm just sad I spent mucho extra money to have that 1800 ram, but maybe a new bios will make things better.

I'll post again if I run into more trouble, thanks for now.
