Zyke01
So I have a system I built in March of 2007 that has been working without trouble since then. Just recently I experienced a video card issue. ( that is a sudden crash and then when I turned it on all the fans and lights (including those on the VC would spin but nothing would display on moniter). I am fairly certain the issue is the video card and have already RMA'd it, but I'm concerned that some of the power supply wires might be a contributing factor because when I first had the problem I removed the Video card and inserted a spare ( one that only takes a single 6 pin connector) and it didn't boot up turn on properly either until I tried the other 6 pin connector. I unplugged and re-plugged the troublesome 6 pin connector, and the spare still wouldn't display when connected. The wire itself doesn't appear obviously damaged, but I can't be certain. All in all, what I really want is to know where I can buy a 6 pin connector that plugs into a different port on the PSU in case thats the problem, just to insure my replacement video card doesn't have any issues in the future. I recall reading an article about running SLI 8800 GTX using molex-6 pin wire. something of that nature would be just right.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 18, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 18, 2008 First I would see if you can isolate the problem to the slot on the PSU or to a particular PCIE cable. If you have problems with the the slot on the PSU then the unit will need to be replaced, however if the problem is only the cable, then we can send you out a replacement cable. Zyke01
Well, I can't really test atm since my busted card is shipped out, and my replacement one not yet arrived, and the card I used for my initial test is a friend's and he's disinclined to allow me to use it for more tests on a potentially faulty wires/psu. having removed the PSU from the case and visually inspected the 2 6 pin ports I can't see anything wrong/bent, but then again not terribly sure what I'd be looking for. I inserted the two cables into both ports from both ends to see if I could tell any difference. I did notice the troublesome wire came out a little more easily on the end that was originally in the PSU (I think I only marked them after I had played with it a bit > >). Due the clip being a bit weaker/worn even so it doesn't come out without pressing the clip, and the difference is pretty slight. The replacement card should arrive in a day or two, if there any any specific action I should take to narrow down the problem please post your recommendations ( besides make sure everything is plugged in securely). Honestly I'm thinking it was just loose wire in both situations, since I didn't personally reseat the the six pin wire into the psu when testing the spare card, and I also didn't try switch which ports the two wires were plugged into at the time.
