shouck
I currently have the TX750, and It's by far the loudest thing in my machine. Is there anything I can do? I read another post and the reply was basically the higher powered units are just louder. I'd gladly trade down to whatever the quietest is, but still strong enough for my load. Thanks! shouck
Sorry about the specs, yeah, redundant. I guess the question I should have asked is basically which PSU is quietest at a 250w-350w load. I also did some testing (very scientific) and kind of put my finger in the fan grill, stopped the fan for a second, and the PC was basically dead silent. Without voiding the warranty, is there anything I can do? It's so close to being silent!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 18, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 18, 2008 The only thing that you can try that would not void the warranty, would be to try loosening the 4 fan screws on the bottom of the unit about a 1/4 turn, and see if it gets any quieter. To answer your previous question, from the specs in your profile, it looks like our VX450 would power your machine just fine, and it will usually be quieter than the larger units. shouck
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure about the VX450, just because I'm considering a 9800GTX+ to replace my 8800GTS G80. Would the additional draw be that much of an issue for the 450? Also, I was looking on the Corsair power supply site, specifically the noise charts. I guess I'm confused how the lower power models are quieter if the charts say they're the same noise, if not louder than the TX750 (look at the db line. They're all about 21db). The only models that look quieter, if at all, are the HX series. Am I really that sensitive that 22db bugs me that much? Also, how much does temperature matter as to the fan speed? In summer, the room *does* get to 85-90F. I guess I'm just curious about what I should do to get as quiet as possible. While keeping warranty. As soon as I get home from work, I'll try the screw loosening idea.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 18, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 18, 2008 Honestly I would think that the 450w would power the system even with the 9800GTX, but if you are moving up to that card, then I would go with either the HX520 or VX550 just to be on the safe side, and to have a little head room. Temperature should not have an effect on the noise, believe it or not. The fan speed is determined by the load on the PSU, not the temperature. Let us know if loosening the screws helps at all, sometimes the screws can get tightened a little too tight at the factory and the fan may be "unbalanced." shouck
I finally got around to loosening the fan screws, and it didn't seem to help the noise issue. So I guess I'm wondering what my options might be. I'd gladly send it in for a replacement (advanced RMA if that's possible), but I don't think a new one is going to be any quieter. Would "downgrading" to a lower wattage model be an option? Thanks
