RAM Issue?

Hello,

Feel free to move this if its in the wrong area.

 

I am having issues getting my 2 new Corsair DDR3 4GB 1600Cas9DHX modules to work at their rated speeds in my Asus striker II extreme. It will BSOD either with a random file error or a memory controller error when set at the rated speeds with 1.8. If i set it to 1.9 it will get into windows but still fail loading apps/BSOD pretty quickly. I haves tried the northbridge volstage at 1.5 and 1.6 and it didnt make it any better. I have 2 kits (4x2GB modules) and have tried it with both kits, just kit B and one stick on its own from KIT A. I have manually set the timing s to 9.9.9.24 and tried with TRFC on auto, 80 and 110.

 

No overclocking has been done yet. I am seting the RAM to these speeds unlinked and either manually or using the auto overclock to get the Mhz up.

 

Are there any settings i am missing or is it looking more like a faulty stick, or kit and i should test each individually to determine exactly which ones are faulty? Or does it more like my mobo is faulty?

try reading through this artical, http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rid=153218. it has a lot of helpful info on this board. It says in the article that they received the best performance with the settings on linked and synced. not sure how much this will really help you. but either way its a good read since have this board. let me know what you end up having to do, I want to run 8 on the S2E mobo as well once the mem comes in.

If you have 2 different sets of memory failing, it sounds more like the MOBO or some other issue. Have you flashed the most recent bios?

most recent proper release, 0901. there is a beta floating around but i dont really want to go for that. Other people have had success in running these modules int his board at the rated speeds so it does look more like a mobo fault/heat issue. I will be getting my ne case next week and setting up dual loop cooling as well as having more airflow in the case and a new RAM cooler. I am contacting Asus about the issue to see if there is something they can recommend that i should be doing but it's just a shot inthe dark to try and avoid having to RMA the board.

well my mobo should be fine since its rated to run at up to 2000Mhz it should be able to run 4 modules slower than that. I will be trying to sort it out properly when i get my new case next week and water cool my board which should help quite a lot. Cheers for the info guys, will post back in a week or so to let you kow how its turned out.

I noticed you had the same concern I've been working on for a while. I think our mutual expectations have been lead astray by reviews posted on sites like AnandTech. I believe if you read his review carefully, he states that he was able to "get it to run" with 8GB at 2Ghz; of course, you and I can do that too, but getting it "to run" is a very, very far cry from getting it to pass MemTest, or run Vista without errors, let alone demanding apps such as games (for which multiple GPUs in SLI are also taxing the poor little 790i's beleagured Northbridge/Southbridge). Please save your money: I bought 8GB of Corsair's 1800Mhz memory - the kit recommended on the Corsair configurator for this board. 4GB can run at 1600 or 1800 just fine, but 8GB simply cannot, no matter what voltages are applied to the NB or memory. It will run flawlessly at 1333, and that's what I'm doing now; but I could have saved a fortune and done the same thing with two 1600MHz kits from Corsair. But the real joke is still on us, since we, the buying public, foolishly throw money away on such high-speed DIMMs; Tom's Hardware articles will convince you that the speed of the memory makes so little difference in actual performance of any real-world application as to be inconsequential. We're talking 1-3% here! So save yourself the headache and the money, and run your 8GB of 1600MHz memory at a stable 8GB speed of 1333-7-7-7-20-2T, with Vdimm around 1.8V and NB around 1.6V. You're then not actually running any slower than you'd ever notice with the more expensive stuff!
