lalawyer
I have a Dell XPS 720 system with 2 gigs of Corsair Dominator PC-2 8500 memory. One of the sticks went bad, and now Dell is going to send me another one. Two Questions: 1. I want to upgrade to 4 gigs. Can I can just buy the Twin2x2048-8500C5D and drop them into the existing system (with the new stick, of course) without any performance change? 2. When Dell sold me the computer they told me that the Dominator sticks were o'c to 1066 mhz. The sticks say 800M on them. In my bios, it says 800M on the memory speed. How do I see if they sticks are running at 800 or 1066? Thanks for the help. Scott
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 13, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 13, 2008 1. I want to upgrade to 4 gigs. A: I would not suggest it just replace what you have now with one Twin2x4096-8500C5D set of modules for best performance. 2. How do I see if they sticks are running at 800 or 1066? A: They will run at DDR800 by default so the system can post,, but the EPP Profile will have to be enabled and if it is they will run at DDR1066. You can run CPU-Z and look in the Memory Tab to see if they are running properly.
lalawyer
Ok...some additional information from CPU-Z. The single ram stick that is currently running is as follows: General Memory type DDR2 Module format Regular UDIMM Manufacturer (ID) Corsair (7F7F9E0000000000) Size 1024 MBytes Max bandwidth PC2-6400 (400 MHz) Part number CM2X1024-8500C5D Serial number FFFFFFFF Manufacturing date Week 165/Year 165 Attributes Number of banks 2 Data width 64 bits Correction None Nominal Voltage 1.80 Volts EPP yes (1 profiles) XMP no Timings table Frequency (MHz) 270 400 CAS# 4.0 5.0 RAS# to CAS# delay 4 5 RAS# Precharge 4 5 TRAS 13 18 TRC 15 22 EPP profile 1 (full) Voltage level 2.200 Volts Address Command Rate 2T Cycle time 1.875 ns (533.3 MHz) tCL 5.0 clocks tRCD 5 clocks (9.25 ns) tRP 5 clocks (9.25 ns) tRAS 15 clocks (28.00 ns) tRC 22 clocks (41.00 ns) tWR 8 clocks (15.00 ns) Is this not PC2-8500 memory? Is it running at 1066 mhz? I see that EPP is not turned on in the bios...do I need to turn that on? Do you still recommend replacement with the Twin2x4096-8500C5D? If so, do I just drop in the sticks or are there other settings I must make to get full performance? Thanks again, Scott
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 13, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 13, 2008 Is this not PC2-8500 memory? A: Yes: EPP profile 1 (full) Voltage level 2.200 Volts Address Command Rate 2T Cycle time 1.875 ns (533.3 MHz) tCL 5.0 clocks tRCD 5 clocks (9.25 ns) tRP 5 clocks (9.25 ns) tRAS 15 clocks (28.00 ns) tRC 22 clocks (41.00 ns) tWR 8 clocks (15.00 ns) Is it running at 1066 mhz? A: Look under the Memory Tab like I told you previously and what does it say? I see that EPP is not turned on in the bios...do I need to turn that on? A: Yes I would suggest talk to the system builder if that is the case so they can help you. Do you still recommend replacement with the Twin2x4096-8500C5D? If so, do I just drop in the sticks or are there other settings I must make to get full performance? A: If you ant 4 Gig then yes you will want to replace what you have and then you would load setup defaults and set SLI Ready memory to enabled or CPU MAX.
