Vesayth
I'm wanting to buy the TWIN2X4096-8500C5D dominator series RAM for my computer. The problem is, I'm not 100% sure it is going to work. Let me give you a little bit of a background on my setup. I bought the ASUS P5K Premium Wifi-AP motherboard almost a year ago, and I bought this same model RAM to go with it except I bought the 2 x 1GB version (TWIN2X2048-8500C5D). Things have been running smoothly at default BIOS settings until a month ago. Suddenly, my PC would not POST. The power would come on and the fans would spin, but no POST. After hours of messing with it, thinking it was my video card at first (because just prior to this I had updated my drivers for my video card), I finally tried to just take out the RAM. I powered on and I got the POST beep message for not having any RAM in my computer. So then I thought, oh crap my RAM went bad. So I put it in a friends computer to test it. That computer POSTed with it, and I was able to run Memtest86. No errors were detected. So then I bought a cheap 1gb stick from wal-mart and put it in my machine. POSTed, booted just fine. So then I was at a loss, my RAM wasn't bad, but the pc wouldn't power on with it in there. So then I started reading these forums and ran across a thread with someone having a similar problem with (what I thought) was the same model RAM as I had. And it suggested manually setting the timings and voltage to 5-5-5-15-2T 2.1V. So I did that (i had to use the cheap ram to get to the BIOS), and BAM it POSTed just fine and booted. Ran like a dream. So the PC ran for about a week like that, and suddenly it just stopped POSTing again. Now I was at a loss. But the next day when I was taking the RAM out and putting the cheap RAM back in, I noticed that the label on the side of the RAM said 2.2V and not 2.1V (even though it was the same model in question). So I set the RAM to 2.2V in my machine, and it has been running smooth ever since. Now with ALL that said, I want to get to my question. I've noticed that every dominator model that is sold these days is 2.1V. I want to buy the 4GB version (2x2GB) to go ALONGSIDE my current RAM to total 6GB of RAM (I plan on doing some server stuff with Linux). What I'm worried about is, since the voltages are different, I don't know if the RAM will work together or if I can even get my computer to boot if I do it. Any insight would be much appreciated! I don't want to stay stuck with 2GB of RAM because I'm currently sitting at a bottleneck (Everything else in the machine runs like a champ!). Edit: I just wanted to add that lower RAM speeds using 4 modules isn't an issue to me (such as 800 mhz as is mentioned in other threads). I just want to know if it will run. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 12, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 12, 2008 They should work but officially we do not support mixing memory but with 4 modules DDR667 or DDR800 would be suggested and set the memory Voltage to 2.1 Volts and set the NB/MCH/SPP Voltage to +.05 Volts. Vesayth
Do you think due to the problem above that lowering the voltage to 2.1 from 2.2 will cause the other memory not to work? Or will changing the NB voltage take care of that? The funny thing is, I can't find any listing anywhere of the RAM that I'm currently using. The specifications on your website say 2.1V but the label on my RAM says 2.2V.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 12, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 12, 2008 The version 1.X was based on Micron and they are no longer available as Micron has moved on to Higher density DDR2 and DDR3 production. sorry!
Vesayth
Ok, so now I'm having the same problem again as stated in my original post. My PC will not POST or boot and I know the settings are correct. It seems like every time I make a minor change it works for a week or 2, and then it quits. The funny thing is, it always works fine while it's running. It just seems to decide to not boot when I reboot or power off then on the next day. I don't know what to do any more. I don't know if the RAM is bad or the Motherboard is bad or if ASUS just doesn't have their act together (from what I have been reading this is a common problem with ASUS boards). Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 13, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 13, 2008 Please test the modules one at a time and if there is a failing module I would get them replaced and since this has happened before I would get the MB replaced as well. Vesayth
When I put them in my friend's machine, Memtest runs fine. While the machine is running (if i can get it to run) it runs fine. I've tested with each module individually in each slot each time this has happened. I'd like to get both replaced but will they give me the older version of the RAM or the newer version (I'd hate to get stuck with the same problem again)? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 13, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 13, 2008 I cannot promise what version you would get in return, you would have to submit the RMA and ask them when you send them in.
