Martin Palmieri
...I know. Hi guys I know there are some threads in this forum about compatibility issues between the ASUS P5B SE mobo and PC-6400 RAM. The 3 boxes I have at home have P5B-E Plus mobos and 2 Gigs of XMS2 CM2X1024-6400C4 all running perfectly without issues whatsoever and I am really glad for that combo. My son's older PC crashed the other day - wouldn't even post - so I had to build him a new rig in a hurry because he needed it for school work. So I bought a P5B SE mobo and 2 gigs of XMS2 CM2X1024-6400C4. The mobo won't boot with memory at 800. Only at 667. The processor is an Intel E6550. This processor has a bus speed of 1333 MHz. I have decided to replace the motherboard and go for an ASUS of the P5Q family - chipset P45. Before I jump into it, I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with: - Is this memory OK with this processor, taking into account that the memory is 800 and the processor 1333 Mhz?` - Will the memory play fine with this motherboard model? I have another side question. When booting up, the computer seems to start up, then seems to shut down and then starts. Also, when changing settings in the BIOS and saving, the PC doesn't do a warm restart but instead, shuts down and does a cold boot. Does that seem like a mobo issue or a PSU issue to you? Aswell as I usually recommend Corsair RAM and PSUs I know I would never recommend this mobo to anyone. Many thanks in advance for your help. (CPU Parameter Recall). meaning that some configuration is not set up properly... try manually fill in all the timings, voltage and dram speed. (also make sure you have the latest bios for that board..) p.s its recommended to use the yellow memory slots.

BIOS is 0904 but I can see that ASUS updated it last week to version 1001 - I'll update it right away. Max voltage this mobo supports is 1.9 What would be the right timings for this RAM? About the C.P.R., does that mean that there is something wrong with the configuration? The other boards I have at home also have that feature but they don't behave that way when booting up. Many thanks again Martin
007bont
all newer asus boards have that function ... i assume you have the: TWIN2X2048-6400C4 kit? then the dram voltage has to be set to 2.1v the yellow slots should be able to deliver up to 2.2V ! see manual 3.4.15 of asus p5q

Still trying to get the P5B SE to work - I'd hate to have to throw it away. The curious thing is that the max voltage you can set this board is 1.9 and the RAM I got is the one you mention - CM2X1024-6400C4, which is on this board's Qualified Vendors List. I'll try updating the BIOS and see if this solves he problem. Otherwise I guess I'll have to order the P5Q Many thanks Martin
007bont
ooh i was under the assumption you already had the pq5 in that case: the p5b-se will always set memory with a latency of 4, back to 667mhz! try setting the timings and dram speed manually again and hope it will work with 1.9v

I guess you can't run PC6400 DDR2 at 800 MHz on this board. Many thanks for your help Martin
007bont
no problem.. if you want to keep the P5B-se have a look at these modules. maybe you can swap them. good luck.

I think your recommendation is spot on. As I see it, the problem with this combo is that the modules I currently have need 2,1V while this mobo only can deliver max 1,9V, so switching to the TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX which theoretically runs on 1,8V could possibly solve my problem. Not to mention that it would be cheaper to buy this RAM than buying a new mobo, especially because this box isn't going to be used for extreme gaming but rather for school work. And as a side benefit, I could move this RAM modules to my P5B-E which currently has 2 Gigs of the same memory. You've probably saved my day, 007bont :):
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted August 11, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted August 11, 2008 That should work, but please not if you install 4 modules in that MB you will likely have to set the memory at DDR667.
