Question about TX550W

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

first post here.

For the last few weeks I've been putting together an AMD rig using old parts I had laying around and some new ones I found at good prices.

Right now my configuration is:

-Opteron 185 (Dual Core)

-DFI Lanparty UT SLI-DR Expert

-2x1 gigs of DDR RAM

-8800GT 512MB

-2 Seagate 7200.10 160gig drives

-1 DVD Writer

and about about 4 case fans.

All these powered by a FSP Blue Storm II 500W PSU.

My problem is this:

Up until yesterday I'd been using the above configuration but instead of the Opteron I used a 4200+ X2 Athlon.

Everything worked perfectly and the system was rock solid.

When I replaced the X2 with the Opteron, all hell broke loose.

I had random reboots, BSODs, lockups...

Thinking that this was a PSU issue I removed the 8800gt and ran the system with an el-cheapo 8400gs.

As was expected everything returned to normal, the system was stable again.

So apparently this PSU can't cut it even with this modest config.

The Opteron has a 110W TDP, while the X2 I was using before has a 89W one.

I have to buy a new PSU if I want to use my 8800GT in that system.

I was thinking of getting a Corsair 550W TX unit (the single rail design).

Do you think I will have problems with it? Will it be able to power everything suffieciently?

Thanks in advance!

I'm sure that you are referring to the VX550. ;): In any event it will provide more than enough power for your rig. I run a similar config (click the pc specs link under my name) on an HX520. Power consumption according to my Kill-A-Watt is ~130W idle and <300W under full load.
