HELP! if put one stick of ram (either one) into my ds4 then everything is fine. once i put both sticks into the motherboard (same color slots, either one) the computer just reboots over and over without posting.

- just bought the motherboard from ebayer who was using CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) TWIN2X2048-8500C5D without issue.

- updated to newest (f5->f11) bios

- i ran memtest on each CORSAIR TWIN2X2048-6400C4 (rated 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V) stick (one at a time) an had no errors at 5-5-5-18 @ 2.0 V (6 hours each)

- i cant run memtest on both stick because i cant get it to post, the computer just keeps reseting its self after a few seconds

is this a motherboard issue? if so, is there a setting i should try changing?

Just curious, which utility did you use to update your BIOS? And does your motherboard have Dual Bios?

If you used @BIOS, I would re-flash with Q-Flash. If you have dual BIOS, be sure to save a copy using that utility. Also, the BIOS FAQ on the Gigabyte site says not to jump too many versions of BIOS, but to step up. Such as don't go from F2 to F11, go from F2 to F6 to F11.

I'm thinking you may have a corrupted BIOS. Also, you could try an older BIOS version.

Why did you need to update your BIOS revision anyway?

Please make sure that you have the latest Bios version and then load setup/optimized defaults and set the Dim Voltage to 2.1 volts (+.3 Volts W/Giga-Byte) and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and then test the module/'s one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with some MB's (Mostly ASUS) you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.

- this has all been done without any error (if done one at a time)

What rev. is the PC-8500 RAM?

Is it rated for 2.0V? That seems low, did you add +0.2 volts in the M.I.T.? Did you try +0.3V?

Your title says: TWIN2X2048-6400C4 but in the thread you say: TWIN2X2048-8500C5D, so which is it?

sorry, original post had a typo. its TWIN2X2048-6400C4. I have tried +0.2, 0.3, 0.4v.

The PSU is a 500W. and i have tried another 500w PSU and got the same problem, so its either the mobo or the ram?

- update: i tried both ram chips together in single channel mode (one red and one yellow) and it boots fine! what does this mean? ram or mobo problem?

This would lead me to believe that the issue is that the motherboard is not dealing well with Dual Channel. Dual Channel is not a function of the DRAM, it is a function of the memory controller.

So i ordered another pair of the corsair memory and they did the same thing. This has led me to believe it the motherboard. Lucky the motherboard was purchase 4 months ago and newegg is willing to RMA the mobo. GOTTA LOVE NEWEGG!

One thing i still dont get is how the original owner is claiming that his corsair dominator ram worked in dual channel mode. Is he BSing me?

Ya figure? :sigh!:

Who knows. Possibly the board did work with dual channel then, and doesn't now. In the world of electronics, much is possible. The only question I have would be that the fellow sold it to you after only a few months and I would wonder since it is not working correctly?

This may sound stupid but, have you tried to install the RAM on the same color slots?

i should have made it clear, i have tried both sticks in the same color (slots 1,3 and 2,4) and that is where i get the issue. I try both sticks in two different colors (slots 1,2) - it works fine, but this is single channel mode on the DS4

I have found (that when single channel mode works and dual does not work) that it is often an issue of the motherboard memory controller. This is predicated on the fact that the DRAM is identically matched.
