Corsair GT problem

Recently when i've been running portable apps from my GT it's been having a delayed memory write error and as it didn't happen enough to be a hindrance i just kept using it. Then a day or so after that i plugged it into another computer at home and all that showed up was a generic drive without a name and showing zero available memory out of zero total. is there anyway to get my data off now and anything i can do about it short of RMAing at this point?

If we're going to help you we need a little more information...What operating system are you running (also, if it's an Windows OS, let us know which service packs are installed). What are your machine specs?

I suspect that your information can be recovered, but I would suggest that you set the drive aside and not try to read or write to it until we know what actually happened.

One thing you can try that shouldn't cause any threat to the data on the drive...whenever you plug in a new USB device, Windows stores information about the device in the registry...if there's a problem during the install, then you're stuck with bad information, or you must go through the registry and manually delete all of the information associated with the new device.

There is a nice little utility for deleting all of the information stored in the registry for USB devices that aren't currently plugged into your machine. Follow this link: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbstick_e.html and scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page until you see a link to "DriveClean". This utility will remove the registry information for any USB device that isn't plugged into your machine at the time your use it.

If you remove your Voyager and then run the utility, the next time you plug in your Voyager Windows will perform a fresh installation!

I have windows XP with SP3, a intel Q6600, 4 gb of ram, 8800GT video card. but i tried something simlar to that, i uninstalled the drivers for it under the device manager tab and it recognized it as a corsairGT but it still comes up as having no space, and it even says that it's functioning. but i'll try that clean up utility next.

It isn't really similar. When you uninstall the driver, it doesn't remove all the information about the drive from the registry...thus, when you plug it back in the OS uses the dataset it has already created to handle the drive. When you use the DriveClean utility, the OS is forced to recreate new information about the drive.

Killerbunbun wrote:"...i plugged the corsair back in, it detected it there and installed the drivers but had the same problem. it came up in my computer as a generic G drive with no space and no files."

When you say "it detected it there..." do you mean that the OS actually saw that it was your Voyager GT, or did it detect a generic drive?

A delayed write failure [the first symptom you noted] could result from problems with your USB Host Controller on your MB...have you tried other USB drives on your box? Two additional things to try that shouldn't threaten the data on your drive:

1. Try uninstalling your USB Host Controller in Device Manager and rebooting to allow the OS to reinstall its drivers.

2. Following 1, if the drive still isn't properly recognized, try rebooting into safe mode, run DriveClean, then plug in your Voyager

Keep us posted on your progress...like to save that data if we can! :sigh!:

By detected it there i mean that it recognized it as a usb flash drive and tried to install the drivers and in the hardware manager it showed up as the corsair GT. but when i went into my computer it just showed up as G drive. but as far as the delayed write error i believe that's happened on two different computers. I'd be running firefox portable for example and it wouldn't come up on the computer and it'd come up with the delayed write error and tell me that the data was lost. but i'll try uninstalling the host controller next, thanks.

I would try and uninstall everything listed in Device manager for the FV and then every thing else but you have to remove the Flash Drive first and then everything in USB Devices and disconnect all USB Devices and restart the system this will reinstall the USB Mass Storage drivers and may solve that if not then let's get it replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it.
