Iggyz
I've read as many of the previous threads on this as I could find. At this point I can't seem to get things stable. Every once in awhile I will get a smooth boot. The BSOD normally occurs during Vista load starting. The full amount of RAM is being recognized within Vista and the BIOS. All updates have been done to this point. As far as I'm aware I am running all the latest drivers for the hardware installed. At this point I'm wishing I would have gone with the Corsair Dual Channel TWINX 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 2048MB) I thought about purchasing originally. In the past I had good results with Corsair and Asus. So I didn't feel the need to do a ton of reading in regards to issues. I had read a few complaints about the Asus P5N-E SLI. But nothing I thought would create a problem for me. Looks as if I was wrong in that regard. I read one thread here with suggested settings for a similar setup. That didn't seem to resolve the problem I'm seeing. I'll try some of the other things I've read here as well. Would it be worthwhile to downgrade the BIOS to a previous version? Or will changing voltage and timings resolve the issue? This is a new build. No previous RAM has been used. I've tried different slot placement. Haven't tried just one stick yet. Thanks for any help and suggestions in resolving things.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 8, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 8, 2008 Please try and set the memory Voltage to 2.0 Volts. Also You'll need to install MS patch 929777 from Microsoft for more than 3 GIG in Win Vista. You can search for it at http://www.microsoft.com. Iggyz
I'm almost sure that patch has been applied but will make sure of that. I've seen voltage mentioned as 1.9 all the way up to 2.1. I'll give the 2.0 a spin. Others seem to have luck with just manually setting things to 2T ( from my reading in various places ). I'll do some testing and report back. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 8, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 8, 2008 Yes Command Rate should be set to 2t as well.
Iggyz
They are set at that. Just tested both DIMMs by themselves. Both will run perfectly and Vista 64 bit will boot when the DIMMs were placed in the first yellow slot closest to the heatsink. I did not try any of the other slots. So this should show that both sticks are in running order. The Microsoft Update came up as does not apply to the new machine when clicking the downloaded .MSU file. No other Microsoft updates are available using Windows Update. I applied all of these the other day. But rechecked yet again. So my question becomes what may I have missed? The motherboard will see the full amount of RAM for both sticks when installed. Vista 64 bit will see the full amount as well when I can get booted into it. So why won't it run both DIMMs smoothly when it will run them great separately?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 9, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 9, 2008 Did you run that patch? and what is the Stop error you get, did you search for it at http://www.microsoft.com/technet?
Iggyz
As I stated above the patch will not install on the machine. When the . MSU file is clicked I get a message stating the patch is not needed for the machine. So no the patch has not been applied. I could try once again - but I'm thinking the same result will be had. "The Microsoft Update came up as does not apply to the new machine when clicking the downloaded .MSU file. No other Microsoft updates are available using Windows Update. I applied all of these the other day. But rechecked yet again." The Microsoft update in the quote I guess should have stated patch to be more clear. On a side note is it best to have both DIMMs in the A1 and A2 slots or is it beneficial to have them next to each other in the yellow and black slots? Instead of in the matching color slots - example black slot black slot.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 9, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 9, 2008 Did you install the SP1 RC1, if so then you wont need that patch and you can go to the history and see if it is listed there. But you can also get that error if you select the wrong patch, there a few different version depending on if you have 32-bit or 64 Bit and Home or professional I think. But what is the error you are getting in windows? Also make sure the setting called TRC is set to 24 in the memory timings.
Iggyz
I knew you would end up going there lol. I had the correct version of the patch for the machine. I'm guessing the patch had in fact been installed already but with the RAM being installed when I applied it something didn't take. And yes I was sure the timings were set properly. No Vista Service Pack 1 release Candidate running at this time. Here is how I resolved the problem. After much reading last night and today I decided on my course of action. What I ended up doing is taking one stick of RAM out of the machine. This left the machine running one 2 GIG stick. Then I did a full clean reinstall of Vista 64 bit. I then installed the patch, rebooted and Vista 64 bit loaded with no problems. I shut the machine down and then inserted the other DIMM. Then I tested if the machine would boot without an issue. This worked smoothly. I then did a series of restarts and turning the machine on and off to test stability. I've been running the machine with both sticks of RAM off and on all day with no problems. The only RAM related setting that has been changed in the BIOS was Command Per Clock set at 2. So the only question I have now is what I asked below. "On a side note is it best to have both DIMMs in the A1 and A2 slots or is it beneficial to have them next to each other in the yellow and black slots? Instead of in the matching color slots - example black slot black slot. " Again thanks for the quick replies and help. It would seem I have gotten the problem resolved. Hopefully this machine will now be heading to it's home tomorrow. Thanks.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 12, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 12, 2008 You want the memory running in dual channel so if that is slots A1 and A2 for dual channel then thats what it should be but most MB's for Dual channel would slots A1 and B1 or A2 and B2. waldo15
My 2 cents. Your second approach worked because you took the extra 2GB before applying the patch. That's it. The patch will only work if your system has 2GB of RAM, and then after installing the patch you can add memory as needed. This has been recommended and proven to work in many places.
