austinite
I recently upgraded the RAM in my Inspiron 1501 to 2GB from 1GB. I purchased the RAM from Fry's (Corsair 1GB DDR2 533MHz PC2-4200). Since I installed the new RAM, I have experienced intermittent issues with restarting my computer (Vista OS). Sometimes, my computer locks up on the shutdown screen and I have to hard reset; after that it may take 3 or more restarts before windows will come up without restarting all on its own... I can't help but wonder if there is a compatability issue here. Can anyone offer any advice? I am half-tempted to put the old 512MB sticks back in and take the Corsair back to Fry's before my 15 days are up...
Wired
Is your memory listed on the compatibility page? http://www.corsair.com/configurator/system_results.aspx?id=60964
austinite
Yes. Fry's cross referenced it at the store. I checked the configurator myself before posting my thread...
Garvin
Did you rememer to remove the battery pack for a couple of minutes when swapping out the RAM? This forces the BIOS and the motherboard to go through its full hardware detection sequence rather than relying on stored values (for say your old RAM). austinite
Thanks Garvin. I just tried that; and so far, so good. I hope that was all it was... Thanks again!
Garvin
Since the system has had a number of crashes it would be a good idea to run Windows error checking on your hard drive to clear up any missdirected file pointer or index issues. If the problems still continue you'll need to remove the battery pack, reinstall your old RAM, go over to your system manufacturer's web site, and find an updated BIOS to install following the manufacturer's instructions.
