More than 4 gb on M2N-E: why single?

Hi,

i have a M2N-E with Vista 64Bit Installed.

I have a 2xCM2X2048-6400 and 2xCM2X1024-6400 for a total of 6gb

The problem is that when i put all together the system works properly but in single channel mode only even if all the memory are twins. Why?

Furthermore, is better to have 6Gb single channel or 4gb dual? (i generally play videogames and do photo editing)

tnx

This really sounds like a mainboard issue to me. Contact the mainboard manufacturer. It may just require a bios update.

Also are the ram timings the same on all 4 sticks, if not manaully set them to the slowest timings you have.

I Have read somewhere that the problem is the way AMD address the ram, so is possible to do dual channel only on 2 banks and not on all 4.

I report this: (it's TRUE??)

"The Athlon 64 has a dual channel memory controller that can run 4 single

sided DIMMs or 2 double sided DIMMS at 400MHz, but can't run 4 double sided

DIMMs at more than 333MHz. As 1GB single sided DIMMs are almost unnobtainable yours are probably double

sided, so you could run just that pair at 400MHz (provided they're placed

one on each controller) but when you added the extra DIMMs, either single or

double sided, the memory controller can'e run them at more than 333MHz.

Basically when you're using double sided DIMMs the only way to run them at

400MHz is to have them one on each memory controller and have the second

slot on that controller empty, because each controller can only run 2

"sides" of memory at full speed, any more and it drops the speed down."

thats not what happening though (and btw the board does have a little to do with it aswell). Your not dropping in speed, your running single channel. Going by the density of 1gb in that quote Id say thats from the s939 or even s754 days.

While its true that most will drop in speed, if the mem matches it should still be in dual channel mode.
