Win98 Driver does not recognize Flash CMFUSB2.0-2GB

Recommended Posts

I have a Flash Voyager [CMFUSB2.0-2GB] and have been unable to get my old Compaq computer (Win98 2nd ed.) to recognize the Flash drive. [The Flash drive is immediately recognized on my WinXP Dell computer.]

I have downloaded the Win98 Driver zip file ["Older Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager"] onto the desktop of the Win98 Compaq, unzipped the driver file, and went through the installation procedure without any (apparent) problem. The Flash drive is not recognized regardless of when it is connected to the USB port, before or after installing the Win98 Driver, before or after rebooting the computer.

The first time I connected the Flash drive to a USB port (before downloading the Win98 driver), the Win98 computer searched for drivers. After that, the computer did not automatically search for drivers.

Any suggestions?

If you connected the drive before you installed the drive you will need to go to device manager and remove the Tag for the device it detected and then remove the device and restart the system and then try to connect it again, But I would also suggest trying the newer Driver as well as making sure you have all of the updates installed. You can get a link to them from http://www.usbman.com

I have successfully removed the tag from the device in the Device Manager, as evidenced by the computer searching for drivers after booting. However, the computer is still unable to locate compatible drivers.

Where should the Win98Driver be installed? After installation of "Older Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" was completed, I was not able to locate it.

Twice I tried downloading "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager", but it stops the download after only 42K.

Is this "Newer" driver more compatible with Win98SE?

As for updates:

I downloaded and installed (in the System 32 folder):

1. Windows 98SE Unofficial Service Pack: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4131.html

2. Microsoft patch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q240075/

3. and another Microsoft patch driver/all/241134up.exe from http://www.malma.it/download/patch/index.htm

Are these appropriate updates for my Win98SE Compaq? and are other updates needed?

thanks.........

RAM GUY, Thanks for PDF instructions. However, these instructions are for installing the driver from a CD not from a download.

Never the less, I tried to use the "Add New Hardware Wizard" (as directed by the PDF instructions), by searching for the best driver, specifying the location as the Win98Driver on my desktop (i.e. C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Win98Driver). However, the Wizard still indicated "Windows unable to locate driver for this device.".

Is it still possible to get the CD (from Corsair) with the Win98Driver?

Amazon.com's package for the 2GB Flash Voyager (packaged by Corsair) did not contain that CD, and another distributor said they do not have the CDs in their packages from Corsair either.

Do you have comparable instructions for installing Win98Driver when the zip file is Downloaded?

Should the installation be initiated through a Wizard search? (as is the installation when the Win98Driver is on CD)

The pdf you sent, i.e. "SYQ131ce555d_FV Win98 Drivers.zip" is the only portion of "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" that downloads when I try to download this "Newer" driver. The driver itself does not download before the download stops. Is this Newer driver not downloadable, or is this just a problem with my downloading?

I also need to check the BIOS settings, but I have not figured out how to do it on my old Compaq Presario 5834. I assumed that I could do it somehow while restarting the Compaq, but I was unable to see a way to do it.

Thanks........biotekno

That was from the Down load in software downloads. I just posted it for you.

And you need to install the driver manually if you don't know how to do that. The CD's do not ship with the drive any more.

You would just simply select Specify Location and send it to the folder where you extracted the file and un-check the CD

Try this- http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

I've used a lot of pen drives and Mp3 players in 98se with this and

never had any problems.

Install the download in the normal way then plug your device in

it will come up with the 'creating driver database' thing, when it

asks you to specify driver location just leave all 4 tick boxes

un-ticked and hit next, all should work.

Hope this helps.

Response: No, the unzipped Win98Driver (from download of "Older Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager") is still NOT installed, or at least not installed so that the Flash drive is recognized.

Response: If I understand what RamGuy suggests (above), I have done what was suggested but the Win98Driver still does not properly install.

In my previous post I indicated:

1. "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager"

2. How to Change BIOS settings?:

RESPONSE:

At: http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php

I downloaded "Windows 98 SE Generic USB Mass Storage Device Drivers v3.3 - nusb33e.exe" to the desktop, but the download abruptly stopped at 46K, leaving an icon "nusb33e" with a "LoadString error".

This is a very similar problem I had when I tried to download the Win98SE Driver ["Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager"] from http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53660. Attempts to download that Win98SE Driver also stopped at about 46K, without downloading the driver.

However, I think I need to have a Win98SE Driver for my Win98SE system, and the driver at http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53660 labelled "Older Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" is a Win98 driver, which is probably why it does on seem to install.

What are you talking about? There is no such response from that user???

RESPONSE:

My mistake. Electro-indigno's comment did 'not' come from this Corsair forum. Because I'm trying to use the Corsair Flash drive to transfer files from my old Compaq (Win98SE) to my Dell (WinXP), Electro-indigo's comment was received in response to a post I made on a Dell forum.

Never the less, my comments are relevant, i.e.

1. I think I need to have a Win98SE Driver for my Win98SE system

2. so far, I've been unable to download a Win98SE Driver from Corsair or from any other source.

For other unanswered questions from today, please also refer to my other Feb. 12 post (which I will not repeat here), which was in response to RamGuy's post on Feb. 11.

Dear RamGuy:

Your comment "What are you talking about? There is no such response from that user???" made me assume the post by Electric-indigno was 'not' on this forum. But that is 'not' correct. That post 'was' made on this Corsair forum. See 02-09-2008 11:55 AM .

OK this is not going any where, Wired he was posting a solution is what I saw not a problem report.

biotekno please just call us when you are in front of that system with the flash drive and we can try to help you. But the fact it works in a XP BOX suggests it's not the Flash Drive. If you are not the person with the problem then please do not post.

And who ever is the person please post for your self.

I am confused by the above comment by Ram Guy. It should be clear I 'am' biotekno and that I have a problem. Why else would I post with the name biotekno and describe a problem? Are you implying someone stole my username of biotekno? and is posting questions instead of me? That is not happening. All posts by biotekno were posted by me, and the forum has my personal email address to confirm that if necessary.

Hopefully, my identity is now clear, so that my technical questions can finally be answered.

As I stated before:

1. I think I need to have a Win98SE Driver for my Win98SE system

2. so far, I've been unable to download the apparent Win98SE Driver from Corsair ["Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager"]. The download stops at only 43KB, with some documents downloaded, but 'without' any driver in the downloaded folder after it is unzipped.

Is there supposed to be no driver in this "Newer" download?, only documents?

Are BOTH "Older Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" and "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" supposed to be downloaded for Win98SE computers? and are the two downloads supposed to be combined somehow?

OK great now that is cleared up and no that was not clear to me. I think the links you posted from another forum or post are what confused me.

I just downloaded the file with no problem from both locations so you have to have some other issue. What version of Internet explorer are you using?

Try Mozilla Firefox! And when you down load the file please use http://www.winzip.com to extract them and not on your desktop create a folder on your C: Drive.

There are four files:

FV_Win98SE_Instructions.pdf

SMIMB.INF

SMIMB.SYS

SMIMBPDR.PDR

And again please call me in the morning after 9:00 AM Pacific Time and ask for me I will help you with this.

800-205-7657 in the US out side the US call 510-578-1421.

When I download "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager", then unzip it, I get the same 4 files you indicate that I should get, with the following file sizes:

FV_Win98SE_Instructions.pdf = 36KB

SMIMB.INF = 2KB

SMIMB.SYS = 19KB

SMIMBPDR.PDR = 9KB

Which of these 4 small files contains the Driver? for Installation? It seems like a file large enough to be a Driver is missing from this download.

Again:..... Are BOTH "Older Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" and "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" supposed to be downloaded for Win98SE computers? and are the two downloads supposed to be combined somehow?

From what I can tell, all you should have to do is extract the Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager to a folder, and then when you specify that folder as the driver location, it should detect the INF file, do its magic, and viola, that's it. If it doesn't work, then I'd call RG like he suggested.

No, the old one should not be necessary for this to work, nor does it appear as if it is dependent on that file in any way, shape, or form.

Try these...

1. In general for Compaq - F10

2. Older Compaq Presario - Press <Alt> <Ctrl> <Esc> at boot when you see the "Compaq" log in big letters

Yes, I think I've done as you suggest.

After downloading "Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager" (either onto the Desktop or directly into the System32 folder), then unzipping the zip file in the System32 folder, I plugged the Flash drive into the USB, which automatically prompts me to "Specify a location", and I enter the System32 file address in general or with the full address of the unzipped "Newer" file, and I get the error message "Windows unable to detect a driver for this device".

Biotechno...I appears that you may have 2 sepearte problems:

1. You are unable to download the newer Win98 SE driver. Are you using a dialup connection? If so, it may be flaky with an HTTP download, try FTP. (Easy FTP is available from http://www.download.com)

2. You are having trouble installing a driver once you have downloaded it (i.e. the older driver doesn't properly install). Drivers are funny about this...have you tried installing the driver in Safe Mode? (use the "F8" key just after the POST to boot into safe mode)

Let us know how this works out for you...:confused:

I would not suggest that you unzip the file to your System32 folder or the System folder in Windows 98 (there's likely to be other "*.inf" files in those folders and windows will examine the first one it finds, which isn't likely to be yours...shouldn't work this way but unfortunately it does). Make a temporary folder and unzip the files into that folder...(if the drivers install properly Windows will write them to the System folder during the install). During the installation of the newer driver, simply directing Windows to the temporary folder should be enough. If it still hesitates, and the new temporary driver folder has a file labeled "*.inf"...direct Windows specifically to that file and make sure it is highlighted. Let us know how this works for you...:confused:

BINGO!!!!!! Thanks Doogie. The nuances of your guidance led to success.

I placed the already-unzipped folder from the "Newer" download into a new folder, which was in the main menu of the C-drive. Then I did exactly as I did before, enterring the address of that new folder when I was prompted to "Specify a location", before which I highlighted the smimb file (which is the .INF file) within that folder. Then, apparently, the "driver" ["smimb.sys"] was automatically installed.

I removed the Corsair Flash drive from the USB port, then re-connected to the USB, after which it appeared in My Computer as a G-drive.

The smimb.sys file was automatically placed in the "Drivers" sub-folder of the System32 folder, which I assume is at least part of the "installation" process.

The other 3 downloaded files (below) from the "Newer" driver remained in the new folder that I created on the C drive.

FV_Win98SE_Instructions.pdf = 36KB

SMIMB.INF = 2KB

SMIMBPDR.PDR = 9KB

Bottom Line:

The Flash drive appears to be serving the function for which I bought it, which is to copy folders off of my old Compaq(98SE), then transfer them to my newer Dell (XP).

One Minor Problem:

I did have one glitch in my test run. Copying of one large (100MB) folder aborted when I got an error message indicating a file name was not acceptable.

This also happened when I was using CDs to transfer files, and, in that case, the problem was caused because the CD software does not allow file names that are too long. Is this also a problem with this Corsair Flash drive?

If so, I may have to zip large folders before copying them, or copy sub-folders, that have files with names that are sufficiently small.

Regardless....... THANKS DOOGIE......... biotekno
