Eddore
Hi, I've currently got 2 GB of TW2X20486400C4D in an EVGA 680i AR motherboard and it's working great. I'm going to be doing the upgrade to the 780i board and have been looking around for the same modules so that I can add another 2 GB, but can't find them. I've been told that they've been discontinued, but don't know why. My questions are: 1. If I find them somewhere, should I go for it and get another 2 GB? 2. By putting in 4 sticks of 1 GB, I've heard that you need to slow it down to 667. Is this true? 3. Is there any other memory that you would suggest instead? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2008 Yes that is true Dominator 6400C4 modules are no longer available. And if you want 4 gig I would suggest getting one set of Twin2x4096-64000C5DHX.
Eddore
Thanks. Will probably do that. A question though. If putting in more than two sticks of memory, should you have to play with the timings, voltage or frequency to get them to work? I've seen in a few threads (elsewhere) about folks that need to do that, but frankly I don't understand why if the memory is rated at that speed, voltage, timing, etc.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2008 There is more loading with more memory and most systems will have to be run at more relaxed settings to properly address all of the memory. And I was NOT suggesting mixing the memory My suggestion was to REPLACE what you have now!
Eddore
Sorry to have misled you by the response. No, will not mix the modules. The old C4D's are destined for another machine when I get the 4 GB C5D's. Was just wondering if down the road I get a couple more of the C5D's if I would need to do anything. Thanks for the help! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2008 I would suggest buying what you plan on using all at one time. Upgrading is hit and miss and subject to change at any time. MB's have progressed to a point where mixing memory is not an easy option and performance is usually hindered with more than two module and if they are not matched in some cases might prevent the system from posting.
