HX-520 with a Abit AB9 Pro

Hi, I'm really baffled by a intermittent problem. I have built a system with the Abit AB9 Pro /Q6600 cpu/ HX-520 psu. I am running 2 x Seagate 160 GB Sata II HDD in a RAID 0 config. When I first put it together I had a Sapphire X1950 512 mb Video Card that requires a PCI-e power connection to the PSU.

The system booted fine the very first time and ran without a hitch for a couple of weeks, then it would lock up after being left on over night - at that time I was using Vista O/S. So I ditched Vista and did a clean install with XP Pro and everything was ok for a couple of days then it started to hang during post in a very strange way. There is no video output or beep from the m/b but according to the diagnostic LED's onboard everything is fine.

I swapped out the X1950 for a spare X700 that I had - keep in mind that this card does not use a PCI-e power connector. It booted fine with this card and did not have any problems with booting from cold or restarts. I rma'd the X1950 and when I got the replacement it wouldn't go past post as before - no video so can't access the bios. I also tried resetting the cmos with no change.

So I put the X700 back in and everything was good again. So now I'm thinking maybe it's the psu - so I rob the X800 GTO2 [has the PCI-E power requirment] from my other computer and it too posted / ran fine so I'm thinking wow two dead or dying X1950 in a row what bad luck. Luckily I deal with a really great place and I managed to change the video card to a HD3850 512mb.It booted fine and I installed the drivers for it, it called for a reboot and then I was back to square one -stuck at post with no video.

So I left it for a week turned off and was about to pull the psu when I thought maybe just try it one more time and it booted fine with no problems. I left it running for a week with no problems and tried to reboot and then cold boot and nogo - back to the same as before.

As a final point - any time it wouldn't go past post/ had no video and I replaced the video card with the X700 it booted/ ran with no problems, and this was 4 - 6 times in total that I have tried.

Any idea's?

p.s. Sorry for the "War and Piece" first post but I tried not to leave anything out from what I have done/tried

The BIOS liner notes for that board do mention fixing some intermitent posting issues. You might try updating the BIOS. The link for that board:

Actually that is one thing I forgot to touch on - I am running the latest bios for this m/b: Bios ID22

I do appreciate the suggestion though.

I would recommend that you try a different PCI-E cable with the card, and try the cable in different ports on the PSU, to see if you can isolate a bad component on the PSU. If you have the same results in all different port/cable combinations then there may be some other issues and, if possible, I would recommend testing the PSU in a different system using a PCI-E video card, to make sure that the PSU is indeed causing the issues. However if this is not an option and you would like try getting the unit replaced, you can used our On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it.

Thanks for reply. I did try the pci-e cable in a different port on the PSU with no change and then I tried one of the regular molex cables with a pci-e adapter with no change. Unfortunately testing the PSU in anither system is not a option. Thanks for the help/ input.
