intiha
I recently bought this memory from newegg "CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory". Before I open the casing and install it, I wanted to confirm if the XMS2 (what is this?) version will work with my desktop? I have checked on the ******** website memory checker that a DDR2 900 (PC2 6400) works on dell vostro 200.. but I am not sure about this XMS2 thingy. Can some one please quickly help me in this regard as I have also got to send out the rebate quite quickly. Thanks.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 24, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 24, 2008 Please look up your system on our memory configurator and only use the modules that are suggested.
intiha
That congfiguration doesnt allow any 2Gb package.... But Dell specification say I can add a PC2-6400, can you please tell me what XMS2 stands for so that I can directly ask Dell?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 24, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 24, 2008 I am sorry but we may not make a module that is compatible with your system that will run at DDR800. And XM2S is Branding of our Enthusiast memory. IE over clock able memory modules.
Wired
The Corsair configurator only lists 3 part numbers as being compatible: VS1GB667D2 VS1GBKIT667D2 VS512MB667D2 As for that other company's compatible chart, they don't list PC2-6400 memory either. If you want PC2-6400 memory, I'd buy it from Dell, as no one else has them listed as being compatible. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&category_id=4325&mfgpid=192641&chassisid=-
intiha
But dell's memory is very expensive. So.. now is any one willing to buy my memory :D
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 24, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 24, 2008 If you already got our modules what is the modules part number you got?
intiha
yes i have bought it.. what number are you talking about? on the memory itself, it says CM2X1024-6400 and then on a separate line 3475153 07510419. Thanks.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 24, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 24, 2008 The part number is CM2X1024-6400 and these modules require 1.9 Volts and that system will not let you set any of the settings. But is the system stable if you just install these modules? You can test it will http://www.memtest.org.
intiha
I havent put them in yet.. if I do, it wont fry the RAM would it? or cause any other problem to e.g. the mobo? I cant try but I dont want to loose money! btw: thanks for trying to help me out!
Wired
worst case is that you get a beep error and replace it with the original memory. can't damage anything.
intiha
Okay so I put them in, and they worked perfectly.. the only problem is, my machine doesnt start if I have all 4 modules (2x512Mb that came from Dell, and 2x1GB crosair ) at the same time. At the most it can take three of them, and boot but otherwise it would not even show the bios screen!!! Since the comp was open anyway, I looked around and the power supply is rated at JUST 160W!!, so I think the prob is that the power supply cant handle the 4 modules at once.. atleast that is what I think. Anyway, RAMGUY, I think you can add the above mentioned memory to your list of approved RAM for atleast DELL vostro 200.
Wired
They aren't compatible with each other. Corsair won't add that to their list, as systems like that aren't meant to have high end enthusiast memory in them. You just got lucky, for now anyways. intiha
for now anyways. Now what does that mean... please u have me scared
RJLeong65
Now what does that mean... please u have me scared What "wired" meant is that your system is safe for the time being, but might face some reliability (stability) issues in the future. Wired
Pretty much yes. Keeo in mind that you are going against the advice of the people who DESIGNED the memory. There's reasons why it's not on the compatibility site in spite of the apparent possibility that it may work together for an unknown amount of time. It won't damage the system / memory, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if you have to RMA the memory due to compatibility issues.

Since it showed no errors, I went ahead with it.
Wired
Different ICs, different PCB, different design. The XMS series requires more voltage than the Dells deliver, and can run at tighter timings than Dell's default settings. The VS series are meant for OEM systems where there's no voltage / timing settings in the BIOS.
