Need to exonerate PSU in HD problem

I have a system with a HX620 supply. The system had been working flawlessly for 8 months. Recently I started running into trouble with one of the HDs not being recognized by the BIOS. Based on some debugging, I think this could be a PSU issue, and I want to rule it out.

Setup:

Two SATA drives hooked up to a Asus P5B motherboard.

Diagnostic:

When both SATA drives are on the same PSU modular cable, SATA drive 2 is not recognized by the BIOS. I should note, the BIOS "knows" something is there as it attempts to read the SATA port, but ultimately claims "not detected". The problem is the same regardless of which drive is plugged into which connector on the PSU cable.

When I have the SATA drives plugged into different PSU modular cables, both drives are detected properly.

The same symptoms appear with different PSU modular cables.

Is there a way to exonerate the PSU in this situation?

Step 1 - With one drive at a time try the following:

Plug the drive into each of the connectors on one of the SATA power connectors and test to make sure that each drive functions properly on each connector individually (you may have done this already).

Step 2 - put both drives on the single SATA cable, load setup defaults in the BIOS (make sure you have the latest BIOS) and if you get the same issue, then switch the drives around and see if the problem follows the particular connector on the cable, or if it follows the drive.

Step 3 - If you still have issues then try the same SATA cable with both drives attached, but try using a different port on the PSU.

Step 4 - Repeat these steps using a different SATA cable.

Make sure you have the SATA data connectors connected to the correct spots on the board, I would double check the manual to make sure.

Thanks! you gave me an extra few ideas, although I'd already followed most of the debugging. It does seem like the problem is with one of the two drives - I just don't know which one  For now though, it seems that as long as I hook them up to different SATA power cables everything is fine - I'm just making sure I keep my backups up to speed each night

If you are able to narrow it down to a particular SATA cable or the PSU itself, then let us know and we would be happy to replace it! You might want to try testing the drive in a different system to be sure that it is in fact a drive itself that is causing the problem.
