red hook
I recently installed an HX520 PSU in my system, and while generally very pleased have a couple of questions: First, I have noticed that from power on until OS start the fan sems to be at full throttle, and pretty noisy. Once the OS starts, the fan cuts back and is almost noiseles. Is this normal? What causes the PSU to throttle, some temperature, cpu load, or something else? Second, I have a Coolermaster Cosmos full tower case. The 24 and 8 pin power cords are too short for optimal routing. I know the 8 pin cord can be extended because the case came with an extension cord and I am using it. Can the 24 pin cord also be extended, and, if so, does corsair sell such an extension? Thanks for any advice offered.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 18, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 18, 2008 When the system boots if the fans all spin at max speed during boot up, this would be the BIOS or motherboard controlling this, and it is common among some systems. The cables should be long enough to route behind the motherboard and then wrap around and plug into the board. Did you install the PSU upside down? red hook
Thank you for your speedy reply and advice, RAM GUY! The PSU is isntalled correctly-it's just that the Cosmos is so tall the cord can't make it behind the MB, up and over and back to the MB connection. It doesn't matter though, because it seems that the side panel of the case wouldn't close with the cord routed this way. In any event, I found another way to route the cord which is probably as efficient in terms of airflow, even if not quite as pleasing to look at. With respect to my first question, looking back over your literature for the HX520, it seems that the fan ought to throttle according to the PSU load. So do you think the BIOS overrides this at power on, or is the PSU detecting a high load?
EliteKiller
With respect to my first question, looking back over your literature for the HX520, it seems that the fan ought to throttle according to the PSU load. So do you think the BIOS overrides this at power on, or is the PSU detecting a high load? You have a low power system and it's unlikely that the psu fan is the source of the noise. Instead I'd look at your cpu & vga fan.
red hook
Thank you, EliteKiller. I have a Zalman 9500 HSF which seems to always run @ 1400-1600 rpm, even when I am in the BIOS, so it's not that. However, my VGA card sits not far above the PSU (at the bottom of the case in the Cosmos), and it could be that what I am hearing is the VGA fan. Would it be typical for the VGA fan to run at full at power on and then throttle back at OS start up?

Yes, this is typical from what I've seen.
