Wolframator
Hi everyone! I bought today my new Power Supply Corsair VX550W and installed it into my System, because I got new hardware like Athlon 6400+ and GeForce 8800 GTS. But there is sth wrong about it. In the first 5 min everything was fine... but after a short time the USP smells reallly strong like smoke, or sth. burned and the PSU got really warm. This happened the first time in my Computerhardewaresystem. Before the VX550W I had a 400W PSU that worked without any Problems. I also checked the cablesystem, so that they are in such position without any confrontation with any other hot things like CPU or MB-chipset. I understand that it is more warm with 550W, but i can't understand the fact that it stinks so much... and while I played a high perfomanced game the hole elictricity in my room shut down. I hope someone of you can help me with this Problem.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 18, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 18, 2008 I would recommend that you try the PSU functionality test from the following thread in our forum: http://www.asktheramguy.com/v3/showthread.php?t=63991. If the PSU smells when you do this test, then it's coming from the PSU and should definitely be replaced, if the PSU seems to operate normally then there may be a faulty motherboard, CPU, etc. If you would like to get the PSU replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Wolframator
Thanks for the answer and the info, I will try the functionality test and then I will be able to decide, if it's defect or not.
Wolframator
I tried to do the functionality test for a while, but now the PSU isn't working anymore! I conected the PSU even with my Computer again, but it's definetly not working. In my point of view the PSU is total defect. I think that's the result of that strange smell. I will request a new one. Anyway, thx for the help and have a nice weekend
