thedon0369
Hello, I have a few questions about my motherboard. I have already rma'd a set of this ram and just received the new ones today. When testing in memtest after about 2 hours i got an error on test 8. So after reading this forum and the sticky about settings for the p5b mobo's, i tried those settings on my mobo. After upping the voltage to 2.1 and disabling legacy usb ports so far I'm not getting errors. My question is, do i have to leave legacy usb disabled or is that only for testing. I'm asking because my usb keyboard won't let me choose an OS in my dual boot menu with out legacy usb ports on. With this give me errors from within windows or just during testing in memtest86+ v1.7??
thedon0369
Here's an update. Well it turns out that with my ram voltage at 2.1 i still got errors on test 8. So i tried restoring all the default mobo settings and then resetting all the dimm values. Still errors. Both the dimms where in the yellow slots on my mobo (slots 0 and 2). So i moved the dimms to the black slots, errors again. So i'm pissed off enough about the ram, but i really want to make sure that it is not my motherboard that is the problem. How can i make sure of this?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 18, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 18, 2008 Test the modules one at a time in the same slot on the board. Disabling USB Legacy Support is only necessary when running memtest, you can enable it during regular use. If both modules fail individually there is a possibility that the board may be causing the problems, however if one passes and the other fails, then we would want to get them replaced. Before the test I would recommend loading defaults and setting the voltage to 1.9v (for 6400PRO), or 2.1v (for 6400C4PRO).
thedon0369
I'm sure that i have done that. I got the memory stable...at 667 mhz. I will try to test each dimm in each separate slot to see if the errors are consistent.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 19, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 19, 2008 Let us know how it turns out, and if they need to be replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace them.
thedon0369
I tested both dimms individually in every slot on my mobo and here are my results. Both sticks failed at 800 mhz. The 1st consistently got errors at the 750th something megabyte. The 2nd consistently got errors on the 383rd something megabyte. Does this mean that the Ram is bad or the mobo?? Both sticks are 13+ hours stable at 667 mhz on this mobo. Also, I have a 1 gig stick of kingston value ram that is 13+ hours stable at 667 mhz. thedon0369
So I decided to test the highest possible stable frequency of these chips. I just got done 9 hour and 22 min memtest at 787.6 mhz. Why are these chips so stable just a tad bit below their rated freq, yet fail memtest within 10 min at 800 mhz? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 21, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 21, 2008 What voltage are you running at? And what is the exact part number of the modules?
thedon0369
The Dram voltage is 1.9 volts. The package says Twin2x2048-6400Pro G. The dimms say xms2-6400 ver 4.1. I've been doing lots of testing and I'm not really sure what to think. So far the ram is stable with a fsb of 315 and the ram set at 790mhz. But I also tested a 265/264 fsb with the ram at 787 and that config failed. Now it looks like it's running stable with my fsb at 395 and the ram at 791. Which is weird because the ram failed with the fsb at 400 and the ram at 800. It seems that my motherboard is being very picky about some of the settings. I've tried just about every config that I can think of. The bios of my asus mobo is 0906. I'm thinking about trying to downgrade it to the 0806 to see if there is any difference. I'm running out of options. I'd rather not rma the board because as thou i want my ram to be able to run at 800mhz i can still get close to the overclock 3.2 that was my goal for my Q6600. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 22, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 22, 2008 Will they pass if the CPU is not over clocked? If so then it may not be the memory that is failing.
thedon0369
Short answer no. Everything passes at stock settings when the ram is set to 667mhz. When the fsb is at 266(stock) the ram fails when set to 800mhz. Basically the ram fails at every setting when it's set to 800mhz. I'm thinking it's a motherboard issue. When I first got the motherboard the first thing I did was upgrade the bios. I'm going to try the original bios that came with the board and report back. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 22, 2008 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 22, 2008 Please load setup defaults and then set the Dim Voltage to 2.0 volts (+.2 Volts W/Giga-Byte) and then test the module/modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. In addition, with this MB you have to disable legacy USB in the bios when running any memory test.
