Asus A7N8X Deluxe 1.04 (1009 Bios) & VS1G400C3 Problem

Hi I just bought a 1gb stick of DDR400 3200 ram (VS1G400C3) for my Asus A7N8X motherboard. When I installed the ram the PC starts up and gets to about as far the log-on screen then resets, it does this repeatedly. Some times before it resets it gives a windows error about the registry being recovered or gives a message about lsass.exe not ending properly. First thing I did was upgrade my BIOS to latest version, no change. I then tried memtestx86 (the latest version). When it runs it gives nothing but constant errors. Next I tried it in 3 other PC's that support DDR3200, the first one refused to boot, the second PC was the same as the A7N8X (booting just to the XP Welcome screen then resetting continually) and the 3rd PC was pretty much the same but gave a Blue screen error before resetting (disappeared too quick to catch the actual error message). I have never had this much trouble with DDR 3200 before, normally I just plug it in and away it goes.

Have you guys any suggestions?

thanks for any help ;):

With the 2400+ CPU you will not be able to run at DDR400. This CPU has an FSB of 133MHz and you will be limited to DDR266. Please load setup defaults, set the memory frequency manually to DDR266 (133MHz) and then set the timings to 2-3-3-6 (CAS-tRCD-tRP-tRAS).

thanks, I will try this.

one question though.

In my bios it has memory timing options :

Active PreCharge Delay:

RAS To CAS Delay:

RAS Precharge Delay:

CAS Latency:

With "2-3-3-6". which numbers apply to which field?

thanks again

CPU Freq: 133 MHz

System Performance: User Define

Memory Frequency: 100%

Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts

Resulting Frequency: 133MHz

Memory Timings: Manual/User Define

Active PreCharge Delay: 6-7

RAS To CAS Delay:3

RAS Precharge Delay:3

CAS Latency:2-2.5

Tried the above. Same problem, Windows boots almost up to the login point but then reboots.

  • 3 weeks later...

hi again,

I was in contact with my retailer and they have sorted out a replacement for me.

I did have a couple of final questions though.

On the web configurator for this Ram (VS1GB400C3) and my Mobo (A7N8X) it says to have the ram voltage @ 2.5 volts, but you say it should be 2.7. Why is this? I'm not questioning your knowlegability :) I just like to at least try to understand these things ;): . I am also slightly paranoid about these settings (votage, timmings etc) since this last failed ram stick. How likely could having wrong bios settings for your ram actually cause physical damage to the stick? Or is the only negative of incorrect ram settings that it just does not function properly?

thanks RAM guy, you do some really good work here, much appreciated
